ThePooideae are the largestsubfamily of the grassfamilyPoaceae, with about 4,000 species in 15 tribes and roughly 200 genera. They include some majorcereals such aswheat,barley,oat,rye and manylawn andpasture grasses. They are often referred to ascool-season grasses, because they are distributed in temperate climates.[1] All of them use theC3 photosynthetic pathway.
The Pooideae are thesister group of the bamboos within theBOP clade, and are themselves subdivided into 15tribes.[1]
Pooidae started diversifying in theLate Eocene, and theirradiation was especially intense during theOligocene andMioceneepochs.[2]
