Jason Paul Douglas Boyd, known professionally asPoo Bear,[3][4] is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his songwriting work for Canadian singerJustin Bieber, having been credited on each of his albums since his compilation,Journals (2013). Boyd has written fourBillboard Hot 100-number one singles with Bieber's performances on "Despacito (Remix)" and "I'm the One", and his singles "Where Are Ü Now" and "What Do You Mean?". Furthermore, Boyd has written Bieber's top 40 singles "Intentions", "Forever", "I Don't Care", and "All That Matters". Prior, Boyd was credited on albums forR&B group112, and co-wroteUsher's 2004 single "Caught Up", which peaked within the chart's top ten. He often writes forScott Storch productions and co-writes in tandem withSasha Sirota.[5]
As a recording artist, Boyd signed withCapitol Records to release his debut studio album,Poo Bear Presents Bearthday Music (2018).[2] He launched the distribution platform, Fwaygo in 2023.[6]
Boyd was born inNew Haven, Connecticut. He moved with his mother toAtlanta,Georgia, at age 9 after a tornado left them homeless.[7] His first career breakthrough came from working withR&B group112, for whom he co-wrote the songs "Dance with Me" and "Peaches & Cream".[8]
Following his early success with 112, Boyd continued to write with other artists, includingChris Brown,Jill Scott, andMariah Carey.[9] In 2004,Usher's albumConfessions was released and contained the single "Caught Up", which Boyd co-wrote withRyan Toby and producersDre & Vidal. The album was certifieddiamond by theRecording Industry Association of America (RIAA), selling over 10 million copies in the US,[10] and is largely considered as one of the best albums of the decade.[11][12][13] "Caught Up" was the fifth single released from the album, peaking at number 8 on theBillboard Hot 100.
While inLas Vegas,Nevada, in January 2013, Boyd was introduced toJustin Bieber through rapperLil Twist and other friends of Bieber's. The two bonded over similar upbringings and tastes in music and traveled the world together while working on music for Bieber's album. During this time, Boyd eschewed working with other artists, devoting his time exclusively to Bieber.[7] He co-wrote the majority of the songs on Bieber's albumsJournals andPurpose, including "No Pressure", where he is also credited as producer, "PYD", "All That Matters", and the double-platinum selling singles "Where Are Ü Now", which peaked at number 8 on theBillboard Hot 100, and "What Do You Mean?", which peaked at number 1 on the Hot 100. On April 27, 2018, Boyd released his debut studio albumPoo Bear Presents Bearthday Music, viaCapitol Records.
In the latter part of the 2010s, Boyd's work found success in both theLatin andcountry music genres. "Despacito (Remix)" was named the number 1 Latin song in the history of theBillboard charts,[14] andDan + Shay's hit "10,000 Hours" reached number 1 on theBillboardHot Country Songs chart.
In addition, Boyd produced the songs "Mañana es Too Late" and "Lo Nuestro es Más", by Mexican pop duoJesse & Joy, with the first one being a collaboration with Colombianreggaeton singerJ Balvin.
