Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr (Welsh for 'Pontypridd,Cynon, [and]Merthyr (Tydfil)';listenⓘ) is a proposedsix-member constituency of theSenedd (Welsh Parliament;Welsh:Senedd Cymru) to be used for the2026 Senedd election.
It was proposed following the2026 review of Senedd constituencies, and will be a pairing of the twoUK Parliament constituencies ofMerthyr Tydfil and Aberdare andPontypridd. It is to have aWelsh-only name.
ASenedd constituency comprising the boundaries of theUK Parliament constituencies ofMerthyr Tydfil and Aberdare andPontypridd, has been proposed by theDemocracy and Boundary Commission Cymru for the2026 election to theSenedd (Welsh Parliament;Senedd Cymru). It was initially proposed using the English nameMerthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and Pontypridd in September 2024,[1] but was renamed toMerthyr Cynon Taf in December proposals with most constituencies using Welsh-only names.[2] It was then given the Welsh-only namePontypridd Cynon Merthyr and its boundaries were confirmed in the commission's final recommendations in March 2025.[3]
It encompasses parts of theprincipal areas (county boroughs) ofMerthyr Tydfil County Borough andRhondda Cynon Taf inSouth Wales. The constituency is to be established by 2026, following the passing of theSenedd Cymru (Members and Elections) Act 2024. The act legislates electoral reform of the Senedd to create 16 larger "super constituencies", pairing the 32UK Parliament constituencies in Wales, and using a new fully proportional voting system, with each constituency electing sixMembers of the Senedd (MSs) rather than one previously.[1]
