Ponni rice is a variety ofrice developed byTamil Nadu Agricultural University in 1986. It is widely cultivated inTamil Nadu, a state in India and is a hybrid variety ofTaichung 65 andMyang Ebos 6080/2.[1] Since theKaveri River is also called 'Ponni' inTamil literature, the rice could have been named after the river.
