TheBay of Pomerania (Polish:Zatoka Pomorska[zaˈtɔ.kapɔˈmɔr.ska];German:Pommersche Bucht;Kashubian:Pòmòrskô Hôwinga) is a basin in the southwesternBaltic Sea, off thePomeranian shores ofPoland andGermany. It stretches between the northernmost tip of the island ofRügen calledGellort northwest ofCape Arkona in the west, and the village ofJarosławiec in the east. In the south, it is bounded by the islands ofUsedom/Uznam andWolin, which separate it from theSzczecin Lagoon which is flown through by theOder River, and is connected to the bay by threestraits, theDziwna,Świna, andPeenestrom.
TheBay of Greifswald with the islands ofKoos andVilm is a large sub-bay in the southwest of the Bay of Pomerania. Apart from Rügen, Usedom/Uznam, and Wolin, the islandsGreifswalder Oie andRuden also lie in the Bay of Pomerania. Maximum depth is 20 metres andsalinity is about 8%. The main ports on the Bay of Pomerania are Mukran Port inSassnitz-Mukran, theport of Świnoujście, theport of Kołobrzeg, the port ofGreifswald on the mouth of theRyck River in Greifswald-Wieck, the port ofDziwnów, and the port ofWolgast.
