Polona Hercog (Slovene pronunciation:[pɔˈlóːnaˈxèːɾtsɔk], born 20 January 1991) is a Slovenian professional tennis player. Her career-highWTA rankings are world No. 35 in singles and No. 56 in doubles. She has won five titles on theWTA Tour, three in singles and two in doubles. Hercog also has had success on theITF Women's Circuit, winning 19 singles and five doubles titles.

Partnering withJessica Moore, she won theFrench Open andWimbledon junior titles in the doubles competition in 2008.

Early and personal life

Hercog was born inMaribor, Slovenia, to florist Romana and bar owner Vojko.[1] As a four-year-old she began playing in the local tennis clinic opened byMima Jaušovec, and at age 14 moved to Italy to train professionally.[2] Hercog is fluent in Slovenian, English, and Italian, and citesJustine Henin as her role model.[1] She currently resides in Doha, Qatar and practises inBudapest.[3]

Career

In September 2007, Hercog received a wildcard and made herWTA Tour debut at theSlovenia Open, losing toElena Vesnina in three sets.

2008: Juniors doubles Majors & first ITF titles

Hercog reached the singles quarterfinals at both the juniorFrench Open andWimbledon. In doubles, she and AustralianJessica Moore won twoGrand Slam titles together, theFrench Open andWimbledon; the latter was the final tournament of her junior career. On 7 July, Hercog achieved a career-high ITF junior ranking of No. 8.

In early 2008, she also won two ITF titles ($10k) and reached the final of a $25k event. Hercog then participated in theİstanbul Cup, coming through qualifying to reach the main draw, where she lost in the first round to eighth seedTsvetana Pironkova. At the same tournament, she reached the final of thedoubles competition partnering with New Zealand'sMarina Erakovic. Ranked No. 215, she made herGrand Slam debut in thequalifying competition of theUS Open, losing toSandra Záhlavová in the first round.[4]

2009

In April 2009, Hercog entered theMorocco Open inFez via qualifying, defeating seventh seedRoberta Vinci to reach the quarterfinals, where she lost to second seedAlisa Kleybanova. At that year'sFrench Open, she qualified for the main draw and upset 23rd seed Kleybanova before losing toAravane Rezaï in the second round. On 5 July, she debuted in the top 100 of the rankings for the first time at No. 89. At theUS Open, Hercog was beaten by American wildcardChristina McHale in the first round. She also played theLuxembourg Open, defeatingMaria Elena Camerin in the opening round. She then lost toSabine Lisicki in two sets. Hercog reached the second round of the 2009Allianz Cup in Sofia, losing toBojana Jovanovski.

2010

Hercog began her season at theAuckland Open where she lost toShahar Pe'er in the first round.[5]

At theMexican Open in Acapulco, Hercog reached her first WTA Tour singles final and won her first WTA doubles title. She defeatedRossana de los Ríos in the first round,Alizé Cornet in the second,Ágnes Szávay retired from the quarterfinals match when Hercog was leading by a set, andCarla Suárez Navarro in two sets in the semifinals.[6] In the final, she lost to top seed and formerworld No. 1,Venus Williams, despite winning the first set.[7] Partnering withBarbora Záhlavová-Strýcová, she won her first tour doubles title, beating the Italian duo Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.

At theIndian Wells Open, Hercog defeatedRaluca Olaru in the first round and was defeated by 11th seedMarion Bartoli in the second round.She caused an upset in the second round of theFrench Open by defeating No. 24,Lucie Šafářová.

In Portorož, she reached the semifinals, was up a set againstAnna Chakvetadze but then lost the match in three sets.Seeded sixth at theDanish Open in Copenhagen, she had a chance to take revenge on Anna Chakvetadze as they met in the quarterfinals. Hercog lost the match, this time in straight sets.

2011

Hercog began the year at theBrisbane International where she lost in the first round toIveta Benešová in two sets.[8] Seeded second in qualifying at theSydney International, Hercog lost in the first round toJill Craybas. At theAustralian Open, she lost in the first round in a close match to world No. 46,Anastasija Sevastova.

After the Australian Open, Hercog played at the2011 Fed Cup World Group II againstGermany. She defeatedJulia Görges, however, she lost toAndrea Petkovic in straight sets.Slovenia lost to Germany 1–4.[9] Seeded second at theCopa Colsanitas, she defeatedPauline Parmentier in the first round.[10] In the second round, she lost toPetra Martić. Seeded second at theAbierto Mexicano, Hercog lost in the first round toLourdes Domínguez Lino.[11] She then stayed in Mexico for theMonterrey Open. Seeded eighth, Hercog defeatedAngelique Kerber in the first round 6–3, 6–3.[12] She then reached the semifinals where she lost to top seedJelena Janković in two sets.[13] At theIndian Wells Open, Hercog lost in the first round to Anastasija Sevastova.[14] At theMiami Open, she lost in the first round toChanelle Scheepers in three sets.[15]

Hercog began her clay-court season at theAndalucia Tennis Experience. She lost in the first round toLaura Pous Tió, 1–6, 2–6.[16] Next, Hercog played at theMorocco Open where she got revenge on Chanelle Scheepers by defeating her in the first round.[17] However, she withdrew from her second-round match against Melanie Oudin due to an ankle injury.[18] At theBarcelona Open, Hercog won her first-round match against lucky loserJamie Hampton.[19] In the second round, she easily beatMirjana Lučić.[20] In the quarterfinals, she lost toLaura Pous Tió in three sets.[21]

2012

Hercog began the year at theBrisbane International. She retired trailing 6–1, 4–1 in her first-round match against seventh seedAnastasia Pavlyuchenkova due to a low back injury.[22] Seeded third in qualifying at theSydney International, Hercog lost in the final round of qualifying to seventh seedEkaterina Makarova. However, she received a lucky loser spot into the main draw. In the first round, Hercog lost to eighth seed Marion Bartoli.[23] At theAustralian Open, she lost in the first round to 22nd seed Julia Görges.[24]

After the Australian Open, Hercog representedSlovenia forFed Cup againstJapan. She lost both of her rubbers toKimiko Date-Krumm andAyumi Morita.[25] Japan went on to defeat Slovenia 5–0. At theOpen GDF Suez, Hercog lost in the first round to Chanelle Scheepers in straight sets.[26] She suffered another first-round loss at theQatar Open to Tsvetana Pironkova.[27] Seeded second for qualifying at theDubai Championships, she lost in the final round of qualifying toAleksandra Wozniak. Entering the main draw as a lucky loser, Hercog lost in the first round to world No. 21,Daniela Hantuchová.[28] Ranked 38 at theIndian Wells Open, she lost in the first round to wildcard Jamie Hampton, 0–6, 1–6.[29] At theSony Ericsson Open, Hercog got revenge on qualifier Jamie Hampton defeating her in the first round 6–1, 6–3. In the second, she lost to seventh seed Marion Bartoli.[30]

Hercog began her clay-court season atCharleston. Seeded 14th, she beat Kimiko Date-Krumm in the first round[31] and AmericanVarvara Lepchenko in the second.[32] In the third round, Hercog upset third seed Marion Bartoli.[33] and in the quarterfinals, 13th seed Nadia Petrova, 6–1, 6–2 to reach the semifinals[34] where she was crushed by ninth seed Lucie Šafářová, 6–0, 6–0.[35] Seeded eighth at theBarcelona Ladies Open, Hercog retired in her first round match againstSorana Cîrstea after losing the first set 4–6 due to dizziness.[36] Seeded ninth at theEstoril Open, she defeatedTamira Paszek in the first round 6–0, 6–3.[37] In the second round, Hercog retired trailing 6–4, 3–0 to Carla Suárez Navarro due to a right foot injury.[38] Ranked 37 at theMadrid Open, Hercog lost in the first round to Shahar Pe'er 3–6, 5–7.[39] At theFrench Open, she was defeated in the first round byAyumi Morita.[40]

AtWimbledon, Hercog lost in the first round to qualifierKristýna Plíšková.[41]

After that, she competed atPalermo where she was upset in the first round byIrina-Camelia Begu.[42] Hercog then played at theSwedish Open as the defending champion and prevailed again, defeatingMathilde Johansson in the final.[43] RepresentingSlovenia at theLondon Olympics, Hercog was defeated in the first round byMaría José Martínez Sánchez.[44]

She played one warm-up tournament before the US Open. At theTexas Open. She facedKiki Bertens in the first round, and won the first set 6–4 when Bertens retired due to a right abdominal injury.[45] In the second round, she lost to third seed and eventual champion Roberta Vinci.[46] At theUS Open, Hercog was defeated in the first round by fifth seed Petra Kvitová.[47]

At theKorea Open, she lost in the first round to eighth seed Ekaterina Makarova.[48] Seeded 11th for qualifying at thePan Pacific Open, Hercog lost in the first round of qualifying to wildcardKurumi Nara. She qualified for theChina Open beating 17th seed Mathilde Johansson andGréta Arn. In round one, Hercog led 5–7, 6–4, 3–0 before Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova retired due to a gastrointestinal illness.[49] In the second round, she defeated Ekaterina Makarova in a very close match.[50] In the third round, Hercog lost to second seed and eventual finalistMaria Sharapova.[51] Her final tournament of the year was at theOsaka Open. She lost in the first round to eventual championHeather Watson.[52]

Hercog ended the year ranked No. 80.

2013

At theAustralian Open, she was defeated in the first round by 21st seedVarvara Lepchenko.[53]

Seeded 17th for qualifying at theFrench Open, she beatAjla Tomljanović in the first round of qualifying, but in the second round she lost toGrace Min. After the French Open, Hercog played the 25k-tournament inMaribor, Slovenia. As the top seed, she won the tournament defeatingAna Konjuh in the final. At the 100k-tournament in Marseille, she was defeated in the semifinals by top seedAnabel Medina Garrigues. Competing at the first edition of theNürnberger Versicherungscup, Hercog upset second seedKlára Zakopalová in the first round. In the second round, she beatJulia Cohen in two sets.[54] In the quarterfinals, Hercog was defeated by fifth seed Lucie Šafářová.[55]

Seeded fourth for qualifying atWimbledon, Hercog lost in the second round of qualifying toPetra Cetkovská.

AtPalermo, she was defeated in the second round by second seed Roberta Vinci.[56] Hercog won theITS Cup as the top seed beatingKatarzyna Piter in the final.[57] Seeded sixth at theBaku Cup, Hercog lost in the first round toGalina Voskoboeva.[58]

Hercog qualified for theCincinnati Open defeating ninth seedLourdes Domínguez Lino in the final round of qualifying. In the first round, she beat world No. 19, Dominika Cibulková, 6–2, 6–4.[59] In the second round, Hercog lost to sixth seed Sara Errani.[60] At theUS Open, Hercog was defeated in the first round by 24th seed Ekaterina Makarova.[61]

At theChallenge Bell, she stunned top seed and defending championKirsten Flipkens in the first round 6–3, 6–1.[62] In the second round, she beat qualifierJulie Coin 6–0, 6–2.[63] In the quarterfinals, Hercog lost toChristina McHale.[64] Hercog qualified for thePan Pacific Open beating ninth seedTsvetana Pironkova in the final round of qualifying. In the first round, she was defeated in a close match by world No. 35, Lucie Šafářová.[65] Qualifying for theChina Open, Hercog beatMonica Puig in the first round 6–1, 6–4.[66] In the second round, Hercog upset 14th seed and former world No. 1,Ana Ivanovic.[67] In the third round, she lost to third seed Agnieszka Radwańska.[68] Her final tournament of the year was theJapan Open. In the first round, she beat Petra Cetkovská,[69] and received a walkover in the second round since her opponent, second seed Sabine Lisicki, withdrew due to a hip injury. In the quarterfinals, Hercog was defeated by Kurumi Nara.[70]

She ended the year ranked No. 66.

2014

Hercog began her season at theAustralian Open. In the first round, she was up against 25th seed Alizé Cornet. Hercog retired trailing 1–0 due to a shoulder injury.[71]

Hercog made her comeback during the clay-court season at theMorocco Open. In the first round, she upsetZhang Shuai 6–2, 6–2.[72] In the second round, she defeatedAlison Van Uytvanck 6–1, 6–4.[73] Hercog was then stopped in the quarterfinals by eventual championMaría Teresa Torró Flor in two tie-breakers.[74] At thePortugal Open, she beatStefanie Vögele in the first round.[75] In the second round, she upset sixth seed Lucie Šafářová.[76] Hercog lost in the quarterfinals to top seed and eventual champion, Carla Suárez Navarro.[77] Seeded sixth for qualifying at theItalian Open, Hercog lost in the first round of qualifying toBelinda Bencic. Her final tournament before the French Open was theNürnberger Versicherungscup. In the first round, she upset third seed Klára Koukalová in three sets.[78] In the second round, Hercog lost to Karin Knapp. At theFrench Open, she defeatedJana Čepelová in the first round[79] In the second round, Hercog was defeated by 15th seedSloane Stephens 6–1, 6–3.[80]

Hercog played only one grass-court tournament before Wimbledon. She lost in the first round atRosmalen to sixth seed Kirsten Flipkens. AtWimbledon, she won her first round match overPaula Ormaechea.[81] In the second round, she was defeated by 23rd seed Lucie Šafářová.[82]

After Wimbledon, Hercog competed at the first edition of theBucharest Open. Seeded eighth in the draw, she defeatedAnna Tatishvili in the first round.[83] In the second round, she beat Katarzyna Piter. In the quarterfinals, Hercog lost toMonica Niculescu.[84] Seeded eighth at theSwedish Open, she lost in the first round toDinah Pfizenmaier.[85]

Hercog began theUS Open Series at theWashington Open. She lost in the first round to sixth seed and eventual champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.[86] Seeded 20th for qualifying at theCincinnati Open, Hercog reached the main draw beatingPaula Ormaechea andJulia Glushko. In the first round, she was defeated by Kirsten Flipkens, 6–3, 6–2.[87] At theConnecticut Open, her final tournament before the US Open, Hercog lost in the second round of qualifying to Karin Knapp, 2–6, 1–6. Ranked 76 at theUS Open, she defeated world No. 35,Elina Svitolina, in the first round in two sets.[88] In the second round, she lost to 17th seed Ekaterina Makarova.[89]

After the US Open, Hercog played at the first edition of theHong Kong Open. She lost in the first round to third seed and eventual finalist,Karolína Plíšková.[90] At theKorea Open, Hercog was defeated in the first round by top seed and defending championAgnieszka Radwańska.[91] Seeded 18th for qualifying at the first edition of theWuhan Open, she lost in the first round of qualifying toNicole Gibbs. Seeded 11th for qualifying at theChina Open, Hercog qualified by defeatingYulia Putintseva and seventh seed Monica Puig. In the first round, she beat world No. 29, Karolína Plíšková.[92] In the second round, Hercog lost to 12th seed Ekaterina Makarova.[93] Seeded second for qualifying at theGenerali Ladies Linz, she lost in the first round of qualifying toLucie Hradecká. Her final tournament of the year was at theLuxembourg Open. She won her first-round match over Marina Erakovic 6–3, 6–4. Then Hercog was defeated by qualifierJohanna Larsson.

2015

Hercog started the year at theShenzhen Open where she lost toZheng Saisai in the second round.[94] Coming through qualifying at theSydney International, Hercog was defeated in the first round by Karolína Plíšková.[95] At theAustralian Open, she lost in the second round to qualifier Lucie Hradecká.[96]

Seeded seventh at theRio Open, Hercog was defeated in the second round by Brazilian wildcardBeatriz Haddad Maia.[97] Playing in Acapulco at theMexican Open, she lost in the first round to third seed and eventual finalistCaroline Garcia.[98] Hercog stayed in Mexico to compete at theMonterrey Open. She was defeated in the second round by eighth seedMagdaléna Rybáriková. Hercog had multiple match points in the third set but failed to convert.[99] Getting past qualifying at theIndian Wells Open, Hercog beat 2009 championVera Zvonareva in the first round.[100] She lost in the second round to 25th seed Caroline Garcia.[101] At theMiami Open, Hercog was defeated in the first round byAnna Karolína Schmiedlová.[102] In Poland at theKatowice Open, Hercog lost in the second round to second seed and defending champion Alizé Cornet.[103]

Hercog began the year atAuckland where she lost in the first round to fifth seed and eventual champion, Sloane Stephens.[104] InSydney, she was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Monica Puig.[105] However, she was awarded a lucky loser spot into the main draw. She lost in the first round to Sabine Lisicki.[106] At theAustralian Open, she was defeated in the first round by 19th seed Jelena Janković.[107]

Seeded fifth at theRio Open, Hercog lost in the second round to Sorana Cîrstea.[108] Playing at theMexican Open, she was defeated in the first round by top seed Victoria Azarenka.[109] At theMonterrey Open, she lost in the second round to eventual champion Heather Watson.[110] Competing inIndian Wells, she was defeated in the first round byYanina Wickmayer.[111] At theMiami Open, she retired during her first round of qualifying match againstFanny Stollár.

Hercog began her clay-court season at theStuttgart Grand Prix. She lost in the final round of qualifying to GermanLaura Siegemund.[112] At theMorocco Open, she was defeated in the first round by fifth seed and last year finalist Tímea Babos.[113] InMadrid, she lost in the first round of qualifying to Madison Brengle.[114] At theItalian Open, she was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Julia Görges. Seeded seventh at theBol Ladies Open, Hercog reached the final which she lost to Mandy Minella.[116]

Beginning her grass-court season at theRosmalen Open, Hercog retired during her first-round match against Varvara Lepchenko.[117] Coming through qualifying at theEastbourne International, she was defeated in the first round by Misaki Doi.[118] At theWimbledon Championships, she lost in the first round to Alizé Cornet.[119]

Competing at theBucharest Open, Hercog made it to the quarterfinals where she was defeated by fourth seed Laura Siegemund.[120] At theSwedish Open, she fell in the first round to Julia Görges.[121] RepresentingSlovenia at theRio Olympics, she lost in the first round to eventual gold medalist Monica Puig.[122]

At theUS Open, Hercog faced second seed Angelique Kerber in the first round. She retired from the match due to illness.[123]

Due to not playing for the rest of the year, Hercog ended the year ranked 139.

2017

She returned to the tour for her first tournament since the 2016 US Open at theFrench Open.[124] where she beat French wildcardHarmony Tan in the first round of qualifying.[125] However, in the second round, Hercog lost to Zarina Diyas.[126] At a $25k tournament inGrado, she lost in the first round toDiāna Marcinkēviča. Seeded seventh at theInternazionali di Brescia, she won the title, defeating Ganna Poznikhirenko in the final in two sets.[127]

2019

Hercog began the year at theAuckland Open. She lost in the first round to third seed Hsieh Su-wei.[128] InHobart, she was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Olivia Rogowska.[129] At theAustralian Open, she lost in the first round to second seed and 2016 champion, Angelique Kerber.[130]

As the top seed at theAndrézieux-Bouthéon Open, Hercog reached the semifinals where she retired after losing the first set againstRebecca Šramková. InDoha, she was defeated in the final round of qualifying byAjla Tomljanović.[131] However, due to the withdrawal ofAshleigh Barty, she entered the main draw as a lucky loser.[132] In the first round, she lost to fellow lucky loser Alison Riske.[133] At theDubai Championships, she fell in the final round of qualifying to Lucie Hradecká.[134] Since Caroline Wozniacki withdrew from the tournament due to a viral illness, she got a lucky loser spot in the main draw.[135] She was defeated in the first round by lucky loserStefanie Vögele.[136] In March, she played at theMiami Open. Even though she lost in the final round of qualifying to Laura Siegemund, she still entered the main draw as a lucky loser. She reached the third round where she was eliminated by second seedSimona Halep.[137]

Hercog won her third WTA singles title at theLadies Open Lugano, defeatingIga Świątek in the final.[138]

2020

Hercog kicked off the season at theAustralian Open, where she lost in the second round to top seedAshleigh Barty.[139]

Playing at theDubai Championships, she was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Kristina Mladenovic.[140] InDoha, she lost in the first round to Alison Van Uytvanck.[141] The WTA suspended tournaments from March through July due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[142][143]

When the WTA resumed tournaments in August, Hercog competed at thePalermo Ladies Open. She was defeated in the first round by Italian wildcardElisabetta Cocciaretto.[144] At thePrague Open, she lost in a tight three-set first-round match to top seed and eventual champion, Simona Halep.[145] She skipped both theCincinnati Open and theUS Open.[146]

Seeded third at theİstanbul Cup, Hercog reached the quarterfinals where she was defeated by Paula Badosa.[147] InRome, she upset fifth seed Kiki Bertens in the second round.[148] She fell in the third round to 12th seedMarkéta Vondroušová.[citation needed] At theInternationaux de Strasbourg, she lost in the first round to 2013 champion Alizé Cornet.[149] At theFrench Open, she was defeated in the second round byLeylah Fernandez.[150]

Hercog played her final tournament of the season at theDubai Tennis Challenge. Seeded second, she made it to the semifinal where she lost to Sorana Cîrstea.[151]

Hercog ended the year ranked No. 52.

2021

Hercog started her season at the first edition of theAbu Dhabi Open where she lost in the first round to fourth seed and eventual champion, Aryna Sabalenka.[152] Seeded 15th at the first edition of theGippsland Trophy, she was defeated in the second round byDaria Kasatkina.[153] At theAustralian Open, she lost in the first round to Caroline Garcia.[154]

Competing inDubai, Hercog was defeated in the first round by lucky loser Misaki Doi.[155]

As the top seed at theOeiras Ladies Open, Hercog won the title when her opponent, fifth seedClara Burel, withdrew from the match due to a left ankle injury.[156]

At theİstanbul Cup, she lost in the first round to Vera Zvonareva.[157] Despite losing in the final round of qualifying at theMadrid Open to Bernarda Pera, she still received a lucky loser spot into the main draw due to the withdrawal of Svetlana Kuznetsova.[158] She was defeated in the first round byJeļena Ostapenko.[159] Getting past qualifying inRome, she lost in the first round to 17th seedMaria Sakkari.[160] At the first edition of theSerbia Open, she was defeated in the first round by Leylah Fernandez.[161] At theFrench Open, she beat 16th seed and 2016 semifinalist, Kiki Bertens, in the first round.[162] She ended up losing in the third round to 20th seed and 2019 finalist, Markéta Vondroušová.[163]

At theBirmingham Classic, Hercog was defeated in the first round by fourth seed and eventual finalist, Daria Kasatkina.[164] InEastbourne, she fell in the first round of qualifying to Zhang Shuai.[165] AtWimbledon, she lost in the first round toDanielle Collins.[166] She also lost in the first round at theUS Open, to tenth seedPetra Kvitová. Finally, she lost in the first round of theIndian Wells Open to Anastasija Sevastova, making her win–loss record 4–14 for the season, the worst in her 15-year professional career.[167]
