The politics of the German state ofSaxony take place within a framework of afederalparliamentaryrepresentative democraticrepublic, where theFederal Government of Germany exercises sovereign rights with certain powers reserved to the states of Germany includingSaxony-Anhalt. The three main parties are the centre-rightChristian Democratic Union, the far-rightAlternative for Germany (AfD), and the populist left-wingSahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW).[1]
Every five years, all Germans residing in the State over the age of 18 elect the members of theLandtag of Saxony. This regionalparliament orlegislature then elects theMinister-President and confirms the cabinet members.
TheChristian Democratic Union (CDU) has been the largest party in every election since the first election in1990 Saxony state election following thereunification of Germany.
There have been four minister-presidents of Saxony since reunification.[2]
