Overview of the politics of Brandenburg

Thepolitics of Brandenburg takes place within a framework of afederalparliamentaryrepresentative democraticrepublic, where theFederal Government of Germany exercises sovereign rights with certain powers reserved to the states of Germany includingBrandenburg. The four main parties are the centre-leftSocial Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the far-rightAlternative for Germany (AfD), the populist leftSahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), and the centre-rightChristian Democratic Union.

Every five years, all Germans residing in the state over the age of 18 elect the members of theLandtag of Brandenburg. This regionalparliament orlegislature then elects theminister-president and confirms the cabinet members.

TheSocial Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has been the biggest party in every election since1990 Brandenburg state election.
