Policastro Bussentino (or simplyPolicastro) is an Italian town and hamlet (frazione) of the municipality ofSanta Marina (of which it is its seat) in theprovince of Salerno,Campania region. It is a former bishopric, now titular see, and has a population of 1,625.[1]

History

The town was founded inMagna Graecia in 470 or 471 BC asPyxus orPixous (Ancient Greek:Πυξοῦς), byMicythus (Ancient Greek:Μίκυθος), the tyrant ofRhegion andMessena.[2][3] It has been aLatin Rite bishopric twice, as Bussento (Latin:Buxentum) and as Policastro, and remains a Catholictitular see as "Capo della Foresta".[4]

During thefascist period, with the union of municipalities ofIspani andSanta Marina, Policastro became ahamlet ofCapitello.

Geography

The town is located on the southern side ofCilento, not too far from thenational park, in the middle of theGulf of Policastro on theTyrrhenian Sea. Situated by theestuary of riverBussento, it is 10 km far (north) fromSapri, 5 fromSanta Marina, 4 fromScario (hamlet ofSan Giovanni a Piro), 25 fromMarina di Camerota (hamlet ofCamerota), and almost 90 fromSalerno. The nearest villages by the sea are Capitello (hamlet ofIspani, far 2 km) and Villammare (hamlet ofVibonati, far 4 km).

Tourism

Policastro attracts visitors, especially in summer, due to the quality of its water, its rural surroundings and a goodrail link and for camping.

Transport

Therailway station is situated in the middle of the town, by the main lineRome-Naples-Reggio Calabria-Palermo/Catania. Regionaltrains run every hour.The town recently inaugurated (2006) as the final track of national road SS18, which runs fromSalerno -Battipaglia -Paestum -Agropoli -Vallo della Lucania -Palinuro toSapri. Policastro has another carriageway, a variation of SS 517 that reachesPadula and theA2 Motorway[5] exit Padula-Buonabitacolo, viaSanza.
