Pizhou (Chinese:邳州;pinyin:Pīzhōu) is acounty-level city under the administration ofXuzhou,Jiangsu province, China. As of 2020 it had a population of 1,462,563;[2] it borders theShandongprefecture-level cities ofLinyi to the northeast andZaozhuang to the northwest.
The city was formerly called Pi County (邳县;邳縣), and before that, Xiapi (下邳) which was at one time the capital of theZhou dynasty (1046–256 BCE) vassalState of Pi. During theHan dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), Pi was a famous city. At the time of theThree Kingdoms period, the city is known for thebattle betweenLü Bu andCao Cao fought there. It is the location Lü Bu retreated to when under siege byCao Cao atXiaopei. He first moved his family there and then he himself after being advised byChen Gong. It was here that Lü Bu was ultimately defeated at theBattle of Xiapi.
DuringWorld War II, theBattle of Taierzhuang took place in Tengzhou. In theChinese Civil War, it was the scene of theHuaihai Campaign. The area is relatively impoverished when compared to the rest of Jiangsu Province. In October 2007, when its party secretaryLi Lianyu returned as a delegate from the17th Party Congress, the entire city was mobilized to greet him in an unprecedented display,[3][4] drawing immense criticism.
Pizhou lies to the northeast ofXuzhou City at the intersection of theGrand Canal andLonghai Railway. To the north of Pizhou, there is the well-knownTai'erzhuang District ofZaozhuang City,Shandong Province.
Pizhou City is home to the longest Dawn redwoodMetasequoia glyptostroboides avenue in the world. The avenue is approximately 60 km long with over one million trees.[5][6]
