
Pirie Peninsula is a narrowpeninsula extending 6 km (3.7 mi) northward from the center ofLaurie Island, in theSouth Orkney Islands ofAntarctica. The peninsula was surveyed in 1903 by theScottish National Antarctic Expedition underBruce, who named it for DrHarvey Pirie, surgeon and geologist of the expedition.
The peninsula has been identified as anImportant Bird Area (IBA) byBirdLife International because it supports abreeding colony of about 14,000 pairs ofchinstrap penguins. Other birds nesting at the site in smaller numbers includeCape petrels (3800 pairs) andimperial shags (170 pairs).[1]
