InGreek mythology,Pirene orPeirene (Ancient Greek: Πειρήνη means "of the osiers"[1]), anymph, was either the daughter of the river godAsopus,[2]Laconian kingOebalus,[3] or the river godAchelous,[4] depending on different sources. ByPoseidon she became the mother ofLecheas andCenchrias.
When her son Cenchrias was unintentionally killed byArtemis, Pirene's grief was so profound that she became nothing but tears and turned into thefountain outside the gates ofCorinth.[5] The Corinthians had a small sanctuary dedicated to Pirene by the fountain where honey-cakes were offered to her during the dry months of early summer.
The fountain was sacred to theMuses and it was there thatBellerophon foundPegasus (asPolyidus had claimed), drinking, and tamed him.[6]
