Piran e Viseh (Persian:پیرانِ ویسه,lit. 'Piran son of Viseh'[1][2][3]) is aTuranian figure inShahnameh, thenational epic ofGreater Iran. Beside Shahnameh, Piran is also mentioned in other sources such asTabari andTha'ālibī. He is the king ofKhotan and thespahbed ofAfrasiab, the king of Turan. He is described as a wise and intelligent man, seeking to bring peace to Iran and Turan[additional citation(s) needed]. In old Iranian writings, Piran andAghrirat are the only Turanians that have been described positively. Piran plays a vital role in the story ofSiavash, the story ofKay Khosro and the story ofBizhan and Manizhe. Piran was killed byGoudarz in the battle ofDavazdah Rokh. Kay Khosro mourned the death of Piran and ordered to wash his body withMusk andAmbergris and be buried in the cave ofZibad. InPersian culture, Piran is a symbol of wisdom.[4] It has been said thatKarim Khan calledMohammad Khan Qajar "Piran Viseh".[4][5] Piran is often compared toBozorgmehr.[3]
According todjalal khaleghi motlagh, Piran may be the MedianHarpagus that savedCyrus the Great.[6]
According to the book of Dr Abas Zamani Piran was buried in the cave ofZibad now called DarSufa Pir.[7]
According toPatrice Lajoye, Piran may not have been a real historical figure at all, but rather aeuhemerized thunder deity descended from theProto-Indo-EuropeanPerkwunos, whose name is cognate with theSlavicPerun andSanskritParjanya.[8]
