Pimethixene is anantihistamine andanticholinergic of thethioxanthenechemical class originally developed to treathyperactivity,[1]anxiety,sleep disorders, andallergy. It is also used foranesthesia and as abronchodilator (to dilate thebronchi andbronchioles for more airflow).

In combination withpholcodine, it was sold in France by Laboratoires Salvoxyl in the 1970s as theantitussiveSalvodex.[2] Pimethixene alone is still available in Brazil under the trade nameMuricalm.

In addition to its other activities, it is a highlypotent butnon-selectiveserotonin5-HT2B receptorantagonist.[3] Theselective serotonin 5-HT2B receptor antagonistBF-1 wasderived from pimethixene.[3]
