Dutch botanist

Pieter Willem Korthals (September 1, 1807,Amsterdam – March 1892,Haarlem) was a Dutchbotanist. Korthals was the official botanist with theDutch East India Service from 1831 to 1836. Among his many discoveries was the medicinal plantKratom (Mitragyna speciosa).^[1]^: 59 Korthals wrote the first monograph on thetropical pitcher plants, "Over het geslachtNepenthes", published in 1839.^[2]

Carl Ludwig Blume named the botanical genusKorthalsia (familyArecaceae) after Korthals,^[3] andPhilippe Édouard Léon Van Tieghem introduced the genus nameKorthalsella (familySantalaceae) in his honor.^[4]Bulbophyllum korthalsii was named after him.

The standardauthor abbreviationKorth. is used to indicate this person as the author whenciting abotanical name.^[5]
