Philip Raphael Soussan (born 23 June 1961) is an English bass guitarist, songwriter and producer, known as a member of the rock bandsLast in Line,Ozzy Osbourne,Vince Neil Band andBig Noize, as well as writing and producing forDokken andToto.
With Ozzy Osbourne, Soussan played on the 1986 albumThe Ultimate Sin and co-wrote the hit single "Shot in the Dark".[1] He toured with Ozzy through the entire "Ultimate Sin" tour.
After leaving Ozzy in 1988 he accepted an invitation to be included in a new band for Billy Idol. He is featured on the "Charmed Life" album.
Soussan initially played with Vince Neil in the fictional band Black Plague, formed for the movieThe Adventures of Ford Fairlane withAndrew Dice Clay; subsequently he was asked by Vince and his manager at the time, Bruce Bird, to write songs, put together a band and ultimately record songs for what would become the new Vince Neil Band.[2] These songs became the basis of the band's first official albumExposed released in 1993.[citation needed]
As a songwriter, Soussan has contributed to all of the bands that he has been with, most notably co-writing five of the eleven songs onExposed - the first solo album forVince Neil following his departure fromMötley Crüe,[3] co-writing half of the soloLuke album forSteve Lukather[4] and co-writing "After You're Gone", the opening track to theToto[5] albumMindfields.
As a producer and mixer, Soussan has worked on many projects includingDokken's "Live from the Sun" CD andsurround sound DVD, variousToto tracks and recordings as well as productions and recordings for many other artists and bands.
In 2006, Soussan released his debut solo album,Vibrate, featuring him singing and playing both guitar and bass on original material.[6] His second solo album,No Protection, followed in 2011 with Soussan playing predominantly all instruments. Songs from both albums have been included in feature films.[7]
Soussan was a member of the supergroupBig Noize along with singerJoe Lynn Turner, guitaristCarlos Cavazo, and drummerVinny Appice.[8] The group has since included keyboardistsGary Corbett andTeddy Andreadis,[9] drummerSimon Wright,[10] guitaristGeorge Lynch and singerSebastian Bach.[11]
Soussan has had roles in several films; as part of the band Black Plague inThe Adventures of Ford Fairlane,[2] as himself inRumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World[12] andThe Life Blood and Rhythm of Randy Castillo.[13]
Outside of the immediate music scene, Soussan became elected to the Grammys, also known asNARAS, as a Board Member in 2007.[14] In 2008, Soussan became Chairman of the Advocacy committee and in 2011 he was elected Vice President of the Grammys in the Los Angeles chapter, a position he held for two full terms.[15]
After organizing the MusicCares grass roots "Giving 2010" benefit funding event funding he performed on 3 May 2010,[16] For this Soussan formed the cover band "Carnival of Dogs" with Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver,Camp Freddy, formerly ofGuns N' Roses andThe Cult),Franky Perez (Solo,Scars on Broadway,DKFXP) andTracii Guns (L.A. Guns, formerly ofBrides of Destruction).[17]John Waite also made a guest vocal appearance.
Between 2016 and 2019, Soussan regularly appeared as a featured artist in theRaiding the Rock Vault musical show in Las Vegas.[18]
In 2016, Soussan joinedLast in Line, a band formed by former members ofDio, following the death of original bassistJimmy Bain.[19] He wrote, performed and contributed to the follow upII album[20] as well as the third albumJericho.[21]
In 2017, Soussan was inducted into the RockGodz Hall of Fame.[22]
