Phi Eta Psi (ΦΗΨ) is an African American collegiate fraternity. It was established on April 5, 1965, atMott Community College inFlint, Michigan. The fraternity chartered 36 collegiate chapters which are now all inactive. Its alumni association and local alumni chapters remain active. The fraternity is a member of theNorth American Interfraternity Conference.
Phi Eta Psi is an African American social fraternity that was established on April 5, 1965, atMott Community College inFlint, Michigan.[1][2] Its founders were Willie Buck, Jerome Davis (Jihad Hassan Sharif), Rondy Harris, James Humphrey, Leon Lucas, Lincoln Murphy, Ronald Thompson, and Eugene Tolbert.[3]
A second chapter,Gamma, was formed atGMI Engineering and Management Institute (nowKettering University) in 1968.[1][4][5]Beta, formed at theUniversity of Michigan–Flint in 1971.[6][1][4][5] The first chapter established outside Flint was atEastern Michigan University in 1971; this chapter was active until 2010.[6][1][5]
The fraternity has been active in voter registration drives, participated in thePoor People's March on Washington, and raised funds forBig Brothers andSickle-Cell Anemia.[1][4][7][8][9] It has sponsored seminars and discussions on political and social issues.[7] The fraternity also sponsors annual scholarships, mentoring programs, and entrepreneurial training.
The fraternity applied for membership in theNational Pan-Hellenic Council in 1971 but was turned down; at the time the fraternity just had four chapters and 150 members.[1] Later, Phi Eta Psi became a member of theNorth American Interfraternity Conference.[2] It was a national fraternity with fifteen chapters in five states by 1975.[7] By 1984, it had 36 chapters and nearly 7,000 members.[1][4]
All collegiate chapters are now dormant, although its alumni remain active at the national level.[5] Its headquarters are located at 250 Boulevard Drive inFlint, Michigan.[10]
The Greek letters Phi Eta Psi were selected to represent the Greek words "Philosophy of the Soul Psychology".[1] The colors of Phi Eta Psi are green and gold.[11] Its member's nickname is Emeralds.[6]
