The Pharnacid dynasty ruled Hellespontine Phrygia during the whole time ofAchaemenid rule inAsia Minor, until the conquests ofAlexander the Great.

ThePharnacid dynasty was aPersian[1] dynasty that ruled thesatrapy ofHellespontine Phrygia under theAchaemenid Dynasty from the 5th until the 4th century BCE. It was founded byArtabazus, son of satrapPharnaces I (younger brother ofHystaspes, who was born shortly before 565 BCE), son ofArsames (died ca. 520 BCE). They were directly related to theAchaemenid dynasty itself. The last member of the dynasty wasPharnabazus III.

Before the Pharnacids,Mitrobates (ca. 525–522 BCE) had ruled Hellespontine Phrygia forCyrus the Great andCambyses II, before being killed and his territory absorbed by the satrap ofLydia,Oroetes. Following the reorganization ofDarius I, Mitrobates was succeeded byOebares II (c.493), son ofMegabazus, before Artabazus became satrap circa 479 BCE and started the Pharnacid dynasty, which would ruleHellespontine Phrygia until the conquests ofAlexander the Great (338 BCE).[2]

The residence of the Pharnacid Dynasty was atDascylium (near modern-day Ergili, Turkey).

After the conquests ofAlexander the Great, several women of the Pharnacid family, all daughters ofArtabazos II, married Alexandrine nobility: Artonis marriedEumenes,Artakama marriedPtolemy I, whileBarsine may have married Alexander the Great and given him a son,Heracles of Macedon.
