Peyton Mckenzie Stearns (born October 8, 2001) is an American professionaltennis player. She has beenranked by theWTA as high as No. 28 in singles, achieved 19 May 2025, and No. 49 in doubles, achieved 25 August 2025.Stearns has won oneWTA Tour singles title, and five singles and two doubles titles on theITF Circuit.
She played college tennis for theTexas Longhorns. In spring 2022, Stearns became the first Texas player to become theNational Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champion in women's tennis and elected to turn professional later that year.
In her first full season on tour in 2023, Stearns made her top 100 debut in April, after reaching her first WTA Tour quarterfinal at the inauguralATX Open in March 2023, before reaching her first career final at theCopa Colsanitas the following month.
At the2023 US Open, she made a major fourth round for the first time and, as a result, reached the top 50 in September 2023.
At the2025 Italian Open, she became the first player in theOpen Era to win three consecutive WTA Tour main-draw matches in third-set tiebreaks having beaten Madison Keys, Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina across round 3 to quarterfinal.
Stearns played two seasons of college tennis at theUniversity of Texas at Austin,[4] where she became the firstTexas player[5] to win the NCAA Division I Women's Singles National Championship in spring 2022. She has cited the success of fellow AmericanDanielle Collins as inspiration for helping her decide to attend college before eventually turning professional, which she elected to do in June 2022.[3][6]
Stearns made herWTA Tour main-draw debut at the2021 Silicon Valley Classic, where she received entry as an alternate into the doubles main draw. She made her major debut as a wildcard at the2022 US Open.[7]
At the inauguralATX Open in Austin, Stearns earned her first WTA Tour win as a wildcard over qualifierKatie Boulter in a three-hour marathon.[8] Next, she defeated fellow wildcard playerMirjam Björklund to reach her first tour quarterfinal, where she lost toKatie Volynets in straight sets.[9][10] The following week, she made her main-draw debut at theWTA 1000Indian Wells Open as a wildcard and overcame a set deficit to defeatRebeka Masarova in the first round, before succumbing toBianca Andreescu from a set up in the next round.[3][11]
Stearns reached her first WTA Tour singles final at theCopa Colsanitas, after defeatingRosa Vicens Mas,Elina Avanesyan,Tamara Zidanšek andKamilla Rakhimova.[12] Though she fell in three sets to defending championTatjana Maria in the championship match, her results at the tournament propelled her into the top 100 for the first time, at world No. 89, on April 10.[13][14] This also ensured Stearns a direct entry into the main draw of the 2023 French Open. Later that month, she reached the final of theLTP Charleston Pro, losing it to compatriotEmma Navarro, in three sets.
At theMorocco Open in Rabat, Stearns defeatedPanna Udvardy andLeylah Fernandez to reach her third tour quarterfinal. She lost toSloane Stephens in a third-set tiebreak, despite holding three match points.[15]
Ranked world No. 69 at theFrench Open, Stearns recorded her first top-50 win, defeating No. 49Kateřina Siniaková. She immediately followed that up with her first top-20 win, defeating former champion and 17th seed,Jeļena Ostapenko, in three sets. She was defeated by ninth seedDaria Kasatkina, in the third round.
At theUS Open, she reached the fourth round defeatingViktoriya Tomova,Clara Tauson andKatie Boulter.[16] As a result, she reached the top 50 at world No. 44, on 11 September 2023.
InIndian Wells, Stearns recorded her second WTA 1000 win overElisabetta Cocciaretto.[17] She held four match points against world No. 2,Aryna Sabalenka, in the second round but lost the match in the third set tiebreak.[18] On her debut in the main draw at theMiami Open, she also reached the second round with a win overWang Yafan,[19] before losing toVictoria Azarenka.[20]
Stearns won her maiden career title at theRabat Grand Prix in Morocco, defeatingMayar Sherif in the final.[21][22]She reached for the second consecutive time the third round at theFrench Open, with wins over first time major qualifierLucija Ćirić Bagarić in three sets,[23] and tenth seed Daria Kasatkina.[24]
At the WTA 1000Canadian Open in Toronto, she reached the quarterfinals for the first time at this level, defeatingAnna Blinkova,[25] and then upsetting seventh seedMadison Keys[26] and 12th seed Victoria Azarenka, both matches by retirement.[27] She lost to third seed and eventual championJessica Pegula.[28]
Ranked No. 47 at theUS Open, she again reached the third round defeatingLesia Tsurenko[29] and upsetting 12th seed Daria Kasatkina[30][31] to set up a meeting with 24th seedDonna Vekić which she lost in straight sets.[32]
In February, at theDubai Championships, Stearns defeatedOns Jabeur in the first round[33] and then overcame world No. 8,Zheng Qinwen, in three sets to record her first win against a top-10 ranked player.[34][35] She lost in the third round to 12th seedMirra Andreeva in a match played later on the same day as her encounter with Zheng due to rain interruptions setting the tournament schedule back.[36]
In April, at theMadrid Open, Stearns defeatedKimberly Birrell,[37] 15th seedAmanda Anisimova[38] and qualifierRebeka Masarova[39] to reach the fourth round, where she lost to world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka.[40] At the next WTA 1000, the2025 Italian Open, Stearns reached back-to-back fourth rounds with an upset over fifth seed Madison Keys.[1] Next she defeatedNaomi Osaka to reach her second WTA 1000 quarterfinal and first on clay.[41] Stearns then overcame 16th seedElina Svitolina to make it through to her first WTA 1000 semifinal,[42] which she lost to sixth seed (and eventual champion)Jasmine Paolini.[43]
In January, at Australian Open Stearns defeated Sofia Kenin in the first round, next she won the duel with Petra Marčinko in the second round. In the third round Stearns was defeated by world No. 3 Amanda Anisimova.
