Peter de Wit (born March 10, 1958, inBeverwijk) is a Dutchcomics artist andcartoonist. He is best known for his comics seriesDe Familie Fortuin,Sigmund and his collaborations withHanco Kolk with whom he created the seriesGilles de Geus andS1NGLE.

Biography

De Wit debuted at the age of 17 with the comics seriesJochem.[1] He started working for the Dutch comics magazineEppo, for whom he drew the comedicwestern comicStampede, which was later renamedDe Cowboys[2] In 1983 De Wit started his long collaboration withHanco Kolk. Together they made the humoristic historical comics seriesGilles de Geus, thephoto novelMannetje & Mannetje (Sidekicks in English; 1988), which was adapted into a TV sketch show forVPRO in 1989[3] and thegag-a-day comicS1NGLE (2001), which was also adapted for television as a sitcom onNET 5. The men also presented an educational TV documentary series about drawing comics and cartoons forTeleac in 1992.[4] They also made a comics adaptation of the TV seriesLaat Maar Zitten forVARA TV Magazine. In 1988 they founded their own publishing companyDe Plaatjesmaker.[5]

His best known solo comics areDe Familie Fortuin andSigmund.[6]De Familie Fortuin (1985-1999) was a gag comic about a dysfunctional and asocial family and was published inEppo,Wordt Vervolgd,Sjors en Sjimmie Stripblad, andSjosji Striparazzi.[7] The scripts were written by Ruud Straatman until 1990, after which De Wit took over this work too[8] In 1994 he introducedSigmund, ablack comedygag-a-day about a cynical psychiatrist. This proved to be his breakthrough. He also madeHet Mooiste Vak Ter Wereld (The Most Beautiful Profession of All Time) about a frustrated teacher in a high school.[9]

He is the winner of the 1999Stripschapprijs.[10]

Personal life

De Wit is the father of comedianTex de Wit.[11]
