Milan Peter Sova (September 25, 1944 – August 27, 2020)[1] was a Czech-born American cinematographer.

Sova was born inPrague,Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (present-dayCzech Republic).[2] After training to be a machinist in Prague (thenCzechoslovakia), Sova would emigrate toNew York City, where he worked fixing cameras atABC.[3]

Sova's first work as cinematographer was on the 1977 filmShort Eyes. Through his career he would collaborate frequently withBarry Levinson andPaul McGuigan, and would work withMike Newell on the gangster filmDonnie Brasco. He became a member of theAmerican Society of Cinematographers in 1999.[1]

He was married to his wife Elizabeth from 1988 until her death in 2018. They had one son together.[2] Sova died inSouth Kortright, New York on August 27, 2020, at the age of 75.[4]
