McPharland played his junior football with the powerhouseSt. Michael's College team.[1] He joined his hometownToronto Argonauts in 1948, playing a game whenJoe Krol andRoyal Copeland were injured.[2][3] In 1949 he was an integral part of theMontreal Alouettes firstGrey Cup championship, playing 3 regular season games but getting "plenty of work" in the playoffs.[4]
