Peter Mattei (born 3 June 1965) inPiteå is aSwedishoperaticbaritone, particularly known for his performances inMozart's baritone roles.
Mattei studied at theRoyal Swedish Academy of Music, and debuted inMozart'sLa finta giardiniera as Nardo at theDrottningholm Palace Theatre in Stockholm in 1990. In 1993 Mattei starred as Pentheus in theIngmar Bergman's TV-filmBackanterna. He sang the title role inMozart'sDon Giovanni for the first time at theGothenburg Opera in the 1994–95 season. In the same season, Peter Mattei performed as Figaro in Mozart'sLe Nozze di Figaro.
Peter Mattei made his international debut as Don Giovanni at theScottish Opera inGlasgow,Scotland. He was then invited to theThéâtre Royal de la Monnaie,Brussels,Belgium and to theAix-en-Provence Festival,France. His first appearance at theSalzburg Festival was inBeethoven'sFidelio, singing Don Fernando conducted by SirGeorg Solti in 1996.Claudio Abbado selected him as the bass soloist inBach'sSt. Matthew Passion with theBerlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2002, Peter Mattei made his first appearance at theMetropolitan Opera as Count Almaviva inMozart'sThe Marriage of Figaro. This role has been followed by, among others the title role inMozart'sDon Giovanni in 2003 and Figaro inRossini'sThe Barber of Seville in 2006. WithDon Giovanni he made a very successful debut atLa Scala inMilan, opening the 2011–2012 season.
Mattei lives inBromma, Sweden. He is married and has two daughters. Mattei can also play the piano, theaccordion and thedouble bass.
