Permafrost tunnel

Apermafrost tunnel is an underground passage dug throughpermafrost for the purpose of facilitating scientific research onclimate change and other goals. It allows scientists access to permafrost layers, opening it up to observation and scientific analysis.[1]

The best known example of a permafrost tunnel is probably thePermafrost Tunnel Research Facility inFox, Alaska, 16 miles north ofFairbanks. It was built in the 1960s and operated by theU.S. Army Corps of Engineers and extends 360 feet into the permafrost.[2][3] A new operating facility was begun in 2024.[4]A Russian permafrost laboratory is located beneath the grounds of theMelnikov Permafrost Institute, inYakutsk, Russia.[5]
