Pedro Miguel Marques da Costa Filipe (born 14 December 1980), known asPepa, is a Portuguesefootballmanager and former player who played as aforward.
Formed atBenfica, where he made seven first-team appearances, he spent most of his career in his country'ssecond tier, with 63 games and 13 goals for three clubs. He also played on loan atLierse in theBelgian top flight, and earned 22caps forPortugal at youth level.
Pepa began working as a manager in 2013, leading fourPrimeira Liga sides.
Born inTorres Novas,Santarém District, Pepa joinedS.L. Benfica's youth system in 1994, aged 13.[2] He made his competitive debut with the main squad on 23 January 1999, scoring in aPrimeira Liga 3–1 home win againstRio Ave FC.[3] After being touted as an early promise, he went on to appear mainly forthe reserve team,[4] also being loaned in March 2000 toLierse S.K. in Belgium[5] for a fee of 50 millionPortuguese escudos.[6]
In 2002, Pepa terminated his contract with Benfica which had four years remaining, following in the footsteps of fellow youth graduatesRui Baião andJorge Ribeiro and signing withVarzim SC, a decision he later claimed as the worst mistake in his life.[7] He ended his career in late 2007 at only 26, due to several knee injuries.[8][9]
Pepa represented Portugal atunder-15,under-16,under-17 andunder-18 levels. He helped the last of those age groups to win theUEFA European Championship in1999.[10]
In summer 2013, after two years working with Benfica's youth sides,[11] Pepa had his first head coaching experience, being appointed atA.D. Sanjoanense in the regional leagues[12] and helping the club to promote to thethird division at the first attempt.[13] In2015–16 he achieved the same feat withC.D. Feirense of theLigaPro, even though he did not finished the season after being replaced byJosé Mota for the final two months.[14]
Pepa continued to work in thePortuguese top tier in the following years, withMoreirense F.C.[15][16] andC.D. Tondela.[17] During his two-year stint at the latter he successfully avoided relegation, but was not retained.[18]
Having started the2019–20 campaign without a club, Pepa replacedFiló at the helm ofF.C. Paços de Ferreira after the fourth matchday, with the team last in the standings.[19] In May 2021, after having led them tofifth place and qualification for theinaugural edition of theUEFA Europa Conference League, he left theEstádio da Mata Real.[20][21]

Days after leaving Paços, Pepa signed a three-year contract to manageVitória de Guimarães.[22] He finished sixth in hisonly season, but he and his coaching staff were dismissed on 12 July 2022, days before the new campaign was due to open againstPuskás Akadémia FC in theConference League.[23]
On 19 July 2022, Pepa was handed his first foreign management job, atAl-Tai FC in theSaudi Pro League.[24] In January 2023, following a 1–0 defeat toAl Wehda FC, he was relieved of his duties.[25]
Pepa switched countries again on 20 March 2023, after being announced as head coach ofCampeonato Brasileiro Série A sideCruzeiro Esporte Clube.[26] He was sacked on 29 August due to poor results.[27]
On 3 October 2023, Pepa was appointed as manager ofQatar Stars League clubAl Ahli SC, on a one-year deal.[28] He returned to Brazil in September of the following year, taking overSport Club do Recife ofSérie B.[29] He achieved top-tier promotion in hisdebut campaign, finishing in third place.[30]
Pepa led his team tovictory in theCampeonato Pernambucano on 2 April 2025, defeatingRetrô Futebol Clube Brasil after apenalty shoot-out.[31] On 3 May, however, he was dismissed, having failed to win a match at the start of thenational league.[32][33]
