Pentyl butyrate, also known aspentyl butanoate oramyl butyrate, is anester that is formed whenpentanol is reacted withbutyric acid,[1] usually in the presence ofsulfuric acid as acatalyst. This ester has a smell reminiscent ofpear orapricot. This chemical is used as anadditive in cigarettes.
