Peninsular Malays Union (PMU,PMS orPEMAS,Malay:Persatuan Melayu Semenanjung) was aRight-wing party formed by lawyerHashim Ghani, a former member ofSingapore Progressive Party (PP) andMalayan Party.[6][7] It formed as an alternative to poorer section ofMalays as opposed toaristocraticUnited Malays National Organization.[8] The party were noted for being among the influential party inSingapore in campiagning for Muslim right.[9] The party were banned on the height ofIndonesia-Malaysia confrontation in 1965.

History

The party were formed to rivalUMNO.[10][11] It were formed on 17 September 1949 at Sultan Ismail Club.[12][13] In response, UMNO bans its members from joining the party.[14] The party took more hard stance by advocatingMalaya for theMalays[15][16][17][18] and Malays self-rule.[19]

In early 1950's, the party leadership were tussled between Hashim Ghani and Ahmad Abdul Rahim.[20][21][22] It were later sorted out with Ahmad Abdul Rahim acted as president.[23]

The party were to contest1959 Malayan general election with 80 candidates but failed to do so during nomination days.[24][25]

The party intend to form aUnited Malay Front for1964 Malaysian general election and compete for all seats.[26][27][28] However this never materialized due to the party lack fund to contest.[29]

At the height ofIndonesia-Malaysia confrontation, several party members were detained underInternal Security Act.[30][31] On 26 May 1964, party president, Ahmad Abdul Rahim were also detained as suspected to be affiliated withIndonesia[32] and on anti-Malaysia campaign.[33][34]

The party were later banned under the same reason.
