The lower circumference of thelesser pelvis is very irregular; the space enclosed by it is named theinferior aperture orpelvic outlet. It is an important component ofpelvimetry.

It has the following boundaries:

• anteriorly: thepubic arch
• laterally: theischial tuberosities
• posterolaterally: the inferior margin of the sacrotuberous ligament
• posteriorly: the anterior border of the middle of thecoccyx.^[1]

These eminences are separated by three notches:

• one in front, thepubic arch, formed by the convergence of theinferior rami of theischium andpubis on either side.
• The other notches, one on either side, are formed by thesacrum andcoccyx behind, theischium in front, and theilium above; they are called thesciatic notches; in the natural state they are converted intoforamina by thesacrotuberous andsacrospinous ligaments.

When the ligaments are in situ, the inferior aperture of the pelvis islozenge-shaped, bounded as follows:

• in front, by thepubic arcuate ligament and theinferior rami of the pubes andischia
• laterally, by theischial tuberosities
• behind, by thesacrotuberous ligaments and the tip of thecoccyx.
