Peitz (German:[paɪts];Lower Sorbian:Picnjo;Polish:Pieczyn)[3] is a town in the district ofSpree-Neiße, inLower Lusatia,Brandenburg, in easternGermany.

Overview

It is situated 13 kilometres (8 mi) northeast ofCottbus. Surrounded by freshwater lakes, it is well known for its fishing industry. The town was at one time on the border between the states of Brandenburg andSaxony, and was formerly protected by strong artillery fortifications built in brick, dating from the 16th century. Only small parts of these remain.

History

From 1661 to 1678, Peitz was the place of imprisonment ofHieronymus Roth, leader of the opposition of the city ofKönigsberg againstFrederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, and opponent of the secession of the city from the Kingdom of Poland.[4]

From 1815 to 1947, Peitz was part of thePrussianProvince of Brandenburg.

AfterWorld War II, Peitz was incorporated into the State ofBrandenburg from 1947 to 1952 and theBezirk Cottbus ofEast Germany from 1952 to 1990. Since 1990, Peitz has been part of Brandenburg.
