Pedro Martínez Portero (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈpeðɾomaɾˈtineθ]; born 26 April 1997) is a Spanish professionaltennis player.He has a career highATP singles ranking of world No. 36 achieved on 24 February 2025 and a doubles ranking of No. 51 achieved on 16 May 2022.[3] He is currently the No. 5 Spanish player.[4]

2018-2020: ATP, Major debuts, top 100 in singles

Martínez made his ATP main draw debut at the2018 Grand Prix Hassan II after qualifying for the singles main draw.

Martínez made his Grand Slam debut in the main draw at the2019 French Open in singles and at the2020 French Open in doubles withChristian Garin.

He reached his first ATP quarterfinal in his career at the ATP 5002020 Rio Open in Brazil defeatingHugo Dellien andPablo Andujar. He made the third round of the2020 French Open in singles, his best Grand Slam result thus far. As a result he entered the top 100 in singles at World No. 97 on 12 October 2020.[3]

2021: French Open semifinal & top 100 in doubles, first singles ATP final

Martínez reached the third round of the2021 Australian Open in singles for the first time at this Major, defeatingEmil Ruusuvuori, his second showing at this level in his career.

At the2021 French Open he reached the semifinals as alternate in doubles with fellow SpaniardPablo Andujar,[5] with whom he also made his Grand Slam doubles debut as a pair at the2021 Australian Open. They defeated the 14th seeded Belgians Sander Gillé/Joran Vliegen in the third round and the pair of Rohan Bopanna/Franko Škugor in the quarterfinals. They entered the tournament as a replacement alternate pair for the top seeds Nikola Mektić/Mate Pavić. As a result, Martínez made his top 100 debut in doubles at world No. 95 on 14 June 2021.[3]During the grass season, Martínez reached the third round of the2021 Wimbledon Championships in singles for the first time in his career, defeating 13th seedGael Monfils, his third showing in the third round of a Major.

Martínez reached his first ATP final at the2021 Generali Open Kitzbühel where he was defeated byCasper Ruud. He secured the biggest win of his career when he overcame world No. 16 Roberto Bautista Agut en route to the championship match.[6] He also reached the semifinals at the same tournament partneringMarc Polmans. As a result he reached a new career-high singles ranking of world No. 76 and a doubles ranking of No. 88 on 2 August 2021.[3]

At the2021 US Open he recorded his first win at this Major overJames Duckworth to reach the second round. After winning the Challenger in Seville, he reached a career high ranking of world No. 59 on 13 September 2021.[3]At the2021 Kremlin Cup he was defeated byMarin Čilić in only the second quarterfinal of the season and third in his career at ATP level. He reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 58 on 25 October 2021. At the same tournament, he also reached the semifinals partneringIlya Ivashka. As a result he returned to a doubles ranking of No. 87 on 25 October 2021 tied with his best ranking thus far.[3]

2022: ATP Cup finalist, first ATP singles & doubles titles, Top 40 in singles

Martínez participated for the first time in the2022 ATP Cup as part of the Spanish team where he played doubles withAlejandro Davidovich Fokina (won both matches) andAlbert Ramos Vinolas (lost both matches) and helped Spain reach the final.

Martínez reached the third round of the2022 Australian Open in doubles for the first time at this Major partnering compatriotPablo Andujar. As a result he reached a new career-high doubles ranking of World No. 72 on 31 January 2022.[3]

Martinez was seeded fourth inSantiago. After receiving a first round bye, he defeatedJaume Munar,Yannick Hanfmann andAlejandro Tabilo to reach his second ATP final.[7] He beatSebastián Báez in the final to win his first ATP title.[8] As a result he made his top 50 debut on 28 February 2022.[9]

He reached the third round of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career at the2022 Miami Open defeatingJan-Lennard Struff and upset 27th seedCristian Garín.

He made his top 40 debut following the2022 Mutua Madrid Open on 9 May 2022.[3]

At the2022 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships he reached the quarterfinals for a second time at an ATP 500 tour-level, defeatingAlexei Popyrin andJaume Munar.[10]

2023-2025: First top 10 win & final since 2022, back to top 40

As a result of a couple of first round losses in the beginning of the season, his ranking fell outside the top 100 after the2023 Rio Open and as low as No. 120 after the2023 Chile Open for not being able to defend his title in Santiago.

Ranked No. 142, at the2023 Italian Open he qualified for the main draw but lost in the first round toAlexander Bublik. At the2023 French Open he again qualified for the main draw defeatingFacundo Bagnis in the last of round qualifying but lost toTallon Griekspoor in the first round.

He returned to the top 100 at No. 99 on 29 January 2024 following a Challenger final inTenerife, Spain.[3]At the2024 Chile Open in Santiago, he reached the semifinals defeating wildcardFrancesco Passaro, sixth seedFacundo Diaz Acosta[11] and third seedArthur Fils.

At the2024 Estoril Open he reached his fourth career ATP semifinal defeatingDaniel Altmaier compatriotRoberto Bautista Agut and lucky loserRichard Gasquet. He defeated top seed and defending championCasper Ruud for his first top 10 win, reaching his first final since 2022. As a result he returned to the top 60 in the rankings. He lost to second seedHubert Hurkacz in straight sets.[12][13][14]

He reached his second clay semifinal at the ATP 5002024 Hamburg Open defeating fourth seedMatteo Arnaldi, qualifierUgo Blanchet and fourth seedFrancisco Cerúndolo before losing to top seed and defending championAlexander Zverev.[15]

Personal life

In November 2023, Martínez and his girlfriend Claudia Espejo welcomed their first child, a boy.[16][17]
