Pavel Eljanov (Ukrainian:Павло Володимирович Ельянов,romanizedPavlo Volodymyrovych Elyanov; born 10 May 1983) is a Ukrainianchess grandmaster. He has won two team gold medals and one individual silver medal at theChess Olympiads.[1]

He acted as asecond forBoris Gelfand in theWorld Chess Championship 2007,[2]Candidates Matches 2011[3] andWorld Chess Championship 2012,[4] forMagnus Carlsen in theWorld Chess Championship 2013,[5] and forMariya Muzychuk in theWomen's World Chess Championship 2016.[6]

Career

In 1999, he was a member of the Ukrainian national youth team, which won the Under-16Chess Olympiad inArtek, Ukraine.[7] In 2007 Eljanov won the B group of theCorus Chess Tournament inWijk aan Zee, theNetherlands with a score of 9/13 points.[8] This result enabled him to qualify for thecategory 20 tournament Corus A group of 2008. In the latter he scored 5/13 points.[9]

He won the 2009 Bosna Chess Tournament (pl), a six-player doubleround-robin tournament inSarajevo, with a score of 7/10 points.[10] In the same year, Eljanov played in the GMRapid event of theRichard Riordan Chess Festival at the18th Maccabiah Games.[11]

In May 2010, he won theAstrakhan stage ofFIDE Grand Prix 2008–2010 scoring 8/13.[12] In August 2010, he won thePolitiken Cup inCopenhagen.[13] In the September 2010FIDE World Rankings Eljanov had a rating of 2761, making him number 1 in Ukraine and number 6 in the world.

In February 2012, he tied for 1st–3rd withMateusz Bartel andAnton Korobov in the 11thAeroflot Open.[14] In February 2013, Eljanov took first place on tiebreak in the strongReykjavik Open. Later that year, in September, he won the 14thAnatoly Karpov International Tournament (pl), acategory 18 round-robin event inPoikovsky, Russia.[15][16] In the following month he won another strong open tournament, theChigorin Memorial.

In April 2014, he won the B tournament of theGashimov Memorial inŞəmkir, Azerbaijan. In theFIDE World Cup 2015, Eljanov defeatedRinat Jumabayev,Alexander Ipatov,Alexander Grischuk,Dmitry Jakovenko andHikaru Nakamura to reach the semifinals. He was then defeated in rapid tiebreaks by the eventual winner,Sergey Karjakin. This result enabled Eljanov to qualify to play in theFIDE Grand Prix series 2017. In 2016, he won the Chess.com Isle of Man International tournament inDouglas edging outFabiano Caruana on tiebreak after both scored 7½/9 points.[17]

In July 2021, he won the 48th International Dortmund Schachtage Deutschland Grand Prix, scoring 6/9.[18]

Personal life

His father wasInternational MasterVladimir Eljanov.[19] In April 2009 Eljanov marriedWIM Olena Dvoretska.[20] He has a daughter born in 2011.[21]

Eljanov graduated from theYaroslav Mudryi National Law University.[22]
