Paul Colm Michael Mescal (/ˈ m ɛ s k əl / MESS -kəl ;[ 1] [ 2] born 2 February 1996) is an Irish actor.His accolades include twoBAFTA Awards , aLaurence Olivier Award , in addition to nominations for anAcademy Award and aPrimetime Emmy Award .
Born inMaynooth , he studied acting atThe Lir Academy and then performed in plays inDublin theatres. Mescal rose to fame with his leading role in theBBC /Hulu romantic drama miniseriesNormal People (2020), earning a nomination for aPrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie .
Mescal's career progressed to film acting with his film debut in the psychological dramaThe Lost Daughter (2021). He received critical acclaim and a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Actor for his role as a troubled father in thecoming-of-age dramaAftersun (2022), aBAFTA Award nomination for his supporting role in the psychological dramaAll of Us Strangers (2023), and box-office success with the historical action filmGladiator II (2024).

Early life and education [ edit ] Paul Colm Michael Mescal was born on 2 February 1996 inMaynooth ,County Kildare , to Dearbhla Mescal Ni Molloy, aGarda , and Paul Mescal, ateacher who also acted semi-professionally.[ 3] [ 4] [ 5] [ 6] Mescal has a younger sister, the singer-songwriterNell Mescal , and a younger brother, Donnacha.[ 6] [ 7] [ 8]
Mescal attendedMaynooth Post Primary School .[ 9] He was a minor and under-21Gaelic football player forKildare and a member of theMaynooth GAA club.[ 10] [ 11] Gaelic footballerBrian Lacey praised Mescal's skills as a defender,[ 12] while physical trainerCian O'Neill described him as "mature beyond his years... very developed and very strong".[ 13] Mescal gave up the sport after a jaw injury.[ 14]
He performed on stage for the first time at age 16, portraying the eponymousPhantom in the musicalThe Phantom of the Opera ,[ 7] [ 9] after which he auditioned and gained admission toThe Lir Academy atTrinity College Dublin .[ 15] He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in acting in 2017.[ 16] He secured agents for his acting career prior to his graduation.[ 15]
2017–2020: Career beginnings[ edit ] After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree, Mescal was offered roles in two theatre productions,Angela's Ashes andThe Great Gatsby ; he took on the latter and starred as the titularJay Gatsby at theGate Theatre in Dublin.[ 17] InThe Irish Times , Peter Crawley highlighted his work as a "butterfly of self-creation among an ensemble in constant motion and fluttering improvisation".[ 18] He also portrayed the Prince in a contemporary retelling ofHans Christian Andersen 'sThe Red Shoes at the same theatre that year.[ 19] Mescal appeared in the world premiere of the 2018 playAsking for It byLouise O'Neill , co-produced byLandmark Productions andThe Everyman inCork .[ 20] The production later transferred to theAbbey Theatre in Dublin; Steve Cummins ofThe Times commended his distinctive performance.[ 21] The same year, he made his London stage debut inThe Plough and the Stars at theLyric Hammersmith and starred in the Rough Magic Theatre Company's productions ofA Midsummer Night's Dream for theKilkenny Arts Festival andA Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man for theDublin Theatre Festival .[ 22] In 2020, he performed in the playThe Lieutenant of Inishmore at Dublin'sGaiety Theatre .[ 23]
Mescal starred in his first television role in the drama miniseriesNormal People , an adaptation of the 2018novel of the same name bySally Rooney .[ 24] It premiered in the UK onBBC Three and in the US onHulu in 2020.[ 25] [ 26] He played student Connell Waldron; he viewed the role as different from himself in the way Waldron's traits include hesitance and emotional unavailability.[ 15] Like the actor did in real life, the character playsGaelic football and attends Trinity College.[ 27] The role propelled Mescal to fame.[ 7] [ 28] He earned acclaim as well as theBAFTA TV Award for Best Actor for his performance.[ 29] [ 30] In their respective reviews forVariety andSlate ,Caroline Framke called Mescal's navigation through the character's emotional collapse "breathtaking", while Willa Paskin noted his concurrent embodiment of "intelligence, insecurity and quiet confidence".[ 31] [ 32] He also received nominations for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie and theCritics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries .[ 33] [ 34]
Mescal starred inDrifting , a short film, which was screened at the 2020Galway Film Fleadh .[ 35] He played a firefighter in theChannel 5 miniseriesThe Deceived and appeared in the music video for the song "Scarlet " byThe Rolling Stones in August.[ 36] [ 37] ReviewingThe Deceived ,The Independent critic Ed Power highlighted Mescal's effortless "sleepy-eyed charm" and "flawless"Donegal accent.[ 38]
2021–present: Rise to prominence[ edit ] Mescal,Maggie Gyllenhaal , andDakota Johnson promotingThe Lost Daughter Mescal made his feature film debut with a supporting role inThe Lost Daughter , directed byMaggie Gyllenhaal in her directorial debut.[ 39] Released in 2021, thepsychological drama garnered favourable reviews.[ 40] [ 41] A year later, Mescal starred as a man accused ofsexual assault in the psychological dramaGod's Creatures and as a troubled young father in the dramaAftersun , both of which premiered at the2022 Cannes Film Festival . The two films received positive reviews with Mescal's performances gaining praise.[ 42] [ 43] IndieWire critic Kate Erbland found Mescal's work inGod's Creatures "powerful" and "quietly chilling".[ 44] ReviewingAftersun ,Peter Travers ofABC News highlighted his "disarming charm and elemental power" in his portrayal of a "complex role".[ 45] He received nominations for theAcademy Award for Best Actor and theBAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the latter.[ 46] [ 47]
Mescal starred inCarmen , which premiered at the2022 Toronto International Film Festival and was theatrically released in 2023.[ 48] IndieWire's David Ehrlich said that Mescal asserts his "gravitas" and "poise" playing a veteran of the US military.[ 49] Mescal portrayedStanley Kowalski in a revival of the playA Streetcar Named Desire byTennessee Williams at theAlmeida Theatre beginning in December 2022. The production met with acclaim and transferred to theWest End in March 2023.[ 50] [ 51] The Times ' s Dominic Maxwell found him "tremendous" and opined that he "makes the latent violence of Stanley Kowalski into something easy, tangible, vibrant yet unactorly".[ 52] Mescal won theLaurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for the role.[ 53]
Mescal at the 2022Directors' Fortnight inCannes In 2023, Mescal starred alongsideAndrew Scott inAll of Us Strangers , a loose adaptation of the novelStrangers byTaichi Yamada .[ 54] He pursued the project as he was keen to play a "vivacious" and "front-footed" character for the first time in his career.[ 55] It premiered at the50th Telluride Film Festival .[ 56] The Hollywood Reporter 's David Rooney commended the "warm, sexy chemistry" between Mescal and Scott.[ 57] For the role, Mescal received a nomination for theBAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role .[ 58] He also starred oppositeSaoirse Ronan inFoe , an adaptation ofIain Reid 's science fictionnovel of the same name ;[ 59] the film was not well received by critics.[ 60] [ 61]
In 2024, Mescal was honoured by theAcademy Museum of Motion Pictures with the Vantage Award, for emerging artists.[ 62] He expanded to big-budget films with his starring role inGladiator II ,Ridley Scott 's sequel to the2000 historical drama , taking over the role played in childhood bySpencer Treat Clark .[ 63] [ 64] Scott cast him after watching his performance inNormal People .[ 65] In preparation, Mescal practiced strength training, fight choreography, horse training, and sword fighting for six months.[ 63] Slant Magazine ' s Jake Cole wrote, "Mescal gives a performance that recallsRussell Crowe 's no-nonsense Maximus fromGladiator , right down to speaking in some of the same cadences and inflections".[ 66] The film earned $460 million worldwide.[ 67]
Mescal will next star inThe History of Sound , a romantic drama oppositeJosh O'Connor ,[ 68] and will portrayWilliam Shakespeare inChloé Zhao 's period dramaHamnet , based on thenovel of the same name .[ 55] He replacedBlake Jenner in the lead role of composer Franklin Shepard inRichard Linklater 'sMerrily We Roll Along , a film adaptation of the1981 musical of the same name , which is set to be filmed over 20 years.[ 69] Mescal has also been cast asPaul McCartney inSam Mendes ' four-part biopic onthe Beatles , with the first scheduled to be released in April 2028.[ 70] Mescal will return to the stage in 2027 in revivals ofA Whistle in the Dark at theAbbey Theatre [ 71] andNational Theatre ,[ 72] andDeath of a Salesman at the National Theatre.[ 72]
Mescal speaksEnglish andIrish .[ 73] [ 74] He moved from his native Ireland to London in 2020.[ 75] In 2022, he said that he had bought a property in Ireland, with the intention of spending time there when he is not working.[ 76] He was in a relationship with American singerPhoebe Bridgers for approximately two years, until December 2022.[ 77] [ 78] He appeared in Bridgers' music video for the song "Savior Complex", directed byPhoebe Waller-Bridge ,[ 79] and provided backing vocals for Bridgers' cover of "So Much Wine", originally byThe Handsome Family . Proceeds from the song were donated to theLos Angeles LGBT Center .[ 80] Since 2024, Mescal has been in a relationship with American singer and songwriterGracie Abrams .[ 81]
He is open about seeing a therapist, which he says is "to keep sane".[ 76] He has said that fans should not feel entitled to know about his personal life and that he is not comfortable inviting any access into that part of his life.[ 77]
Mescal plays the piano[ 14] and has performed covers of songs with his sister, singerNell Mescal .[ 82] In July 2020, he performed spoken word and sang with singerDermot Kennedy at theNatural History Museum in London.[ 83] He participated in a virtual stage reading of the playThis Is Our Youth byKenneth Lonergan as part of a series benefiting theActors Fund of America charity in October 2020.[ 84]
