Paul Davies-Hale (born 21 June 1962) is an English formerlong-distance runner. He won the2000 metres steeplechase at the1981 European Junior Championships and went on to representGreat Britain at the1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the1992 Barcelona Olympics.[1]
Davies-Hale was a promising junior cross-country runner fromRugeley,Staffordshire.[2]He progressed to the track and representedEngland in the3000 metres steeplechase event, at the1982 Commonwealth Games inBrisbane, Australia.[3][4]
He finished second behind SpaniardDomingo Ramón in the steeplechase event at the1984 AAA Championships[5] but by virtue of being the highest placed British athlete was considered theBritish 3000 metres steeplechase champion.[6] Shortly afterwards he representedGreat Britain at the1984 Los Angeles Olympics running the 3000m steeplechase.[1]
In 1985 he moved toBoulder, Colorado to train. He moved up to the longer distances ofHalf Marathon and eventually theMarathon. He won the 1989Chicago Marathon, his first ever marathon, which was a hot and humid race.[7] In the race he overtook compatriotDavid Long and beat RussianRavil Kashapov by two minutes. In 1991, he finished second in theGreat North Run[8] just seven seconds behind the KenyanBenson Masya.
Eight years after his first appearance at theSummer Olympics, he competed again at the1992 Barcelona Olympics in theMarathon.[9] He finished 41st behind both British runnersDavid Long, 39th, andSteve Brace, 27th.
Davies-Hale has organised several running events including the 'Action Heart race',[10] 'Baggeridge 5K', 'Suicide Six' and 'Sheepwalks Shocker'.
