Paul Alan Campbell (born July 26, 1995) is an American professionalbaseballpitcher who is a free agent. He has previously played inMajor League Baseball (MLB) for theMiami Marlins.
Campbell graduated fromMalden Catholic High School inMalden, Massachusetts, in 2014.[1] He attendedClemson University, where he playedcollege baseball for theClemson Tigers from 2015 through 2017.
TheTampa Bay Rays selected Campbell in the 21st round, with the 619th overall selection, of the2017 Major League Baseball draft.[2] Campbell finished 2019 with the Double-AMontgomery Biscuits, pitching to a 8–4win–loss record and a 3.36earned run average (ERA) with 63strikeouts across85+2⁄3innings pitched in 16 appearances.[3] Through the 2019 season, Campbell had a career 3.12 ERA through233+1⁄3 minor league innings in three years in the Rays' minor league system.
On December 10, 2020, theMiami Marlins selected Campbell from the Rays in theRule 5 draft.[3] Campbell made the Marlins'Opening Day roster for the 2021 season.[4] On April 3, 2021, Campbell made his MLB debut in relief against theTampa Bay Rays.[5] He started his first MLB game on May 1.[6] On May 3, Campbell was suspended 80 games after violating MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, testing positive forDehydrochlormethyltestosterone (DHCMT), ananabolic-androgenic steroid.[7] Campbell made 16 appearances for Miami in 2021, pitching to a 2–3 record and 6.41 ERA with 26 strikeouts in26+2⁄3 innings pitched.
On May 27, 2022, Campbell was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow strain.[8] On August 30, it was announced that Campbell had undergoneTommy John surgery and would miss the remainder of the season season as well as most of the 2023 season.[9] He was removed from the40-man roster and sent outright to the Triple–AJacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on November 2.[10]
Campbell returned to action in 2024 with the Single–AJupiter Hammerheads and Double–APensacola Blue Wahoos. In 11 starts between the two affiliates, he accumulated a 5–1 record and 3.78 ERA with 42 strikeouts across 50 innings pitched.[11] Campbell was released by the Marlins organization on July 29, 2024.[12]
