Patrick Mukutu Ivuti (born June 30, 1978) is a Kenyanlong distanceathlete, who currently resides inNairobi, Kenya.[1] A two-time silver medallist at theIAAF World Cross Country Championships, he made hismarathon debut in 2005 and had his first major victory at theChicago Marathon in 2007. He had back-to-back wins at theHonolulu Marathon in 2008–2009 and was the 2009 winner of thePrague Marathon.

Biography

Ivuti has competed several times at theIAAF World Cross Country Championships, finishing second in 1999 behindPaul Tergat and runner-up again in 2003 when the race was won byKenenisa Bekele. He also won theIAAF'sBelfast International Cross Country meeting in 2000. However, he was plagued by injuries during much of the early part of this decade.[2] He also competed at the2000 Summer Olympics and finished fourth in the10,000 metres.[3] He was a two-time winner of theAlmond Blossom Cross Country during this period.[4]

Ivuti made his debut over the marathon distance at the 2005 Chicago Marathon.[1] He has broken the hour mark several times since running a time of 59:31 inLisbon 2000.[1][5] He set his newhalf marathon personal record of 59:27 at theRotterdam Half Marathon on September 9, 2007.[1] He won thePrague International Half Marathon with a course record 1:01 on March 24, 2007, inPrague,Czech Republic.[6]

He won theChicago Marathon held on October 7, 2007, with a time of 2:11:11 hours.[7] The race was the closest Chicago Marathon ever and aphoto finish culmination of a shoulder to shoulder final 300 meter stretch run withJaouad Gharib downColumbus Drive on a day of record-setting 88 °F (31 °C) temperatures.[8][9]

He could not defend Chicago marathon title in 2008 due to injury. In December 2008 Ivuti won theHonolulu Marathon.[10] In May 2009 he won thePrague Marathon and set a new race record. He also repeated the Honolulu Marathon victory. He had a disappointing run in Prague in 2010, coming nineteenth,[11] but he rebounded at the 2011Vienna City Marathon by recording his third career sub-2:10 time to take second place behindJohn Kiprotich.[12] He returned to Honolulu but was beaten to the title byNicholas Chelimo by a margin of three seconds.[13]

Ivuti is married and his wife Marietta is sister ofJimmy Muindi, also a Kenyan marathon runner.[14]
