ThePatriarchate of Cilicia (Latin:Patriarchatus Ciliciæ Armenorum) is an ecclesiastical jurisdiction and the onlypatriarchate of theArmenian Catholic Church of theCatholic Church. The territorial jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Cilicia is theArcheparchy of Beirut, over which the Patriarch of Cilicia holdsordinary authority. TheSt. Elie and St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Catholic Cathedral inBeirut,Lebanon, is thecathedra of the Patriarchate.[1] The Patriarchate is headed by PatriarchRaphaël Bedros XXI Minassian elected in September 2021.

History

While thediocese ofCilicia dates back to 294,[1]it was promoted to a patriarchate in 1742.[2] In 1866, the seat of the patriarchate was moved toConstantinople,Ottoman Empire (nowIstanbul,Turkey), and in 1928 to Beirut, Lebanon, where it remains today.[3]
