ThePathar Mosque, known locally asNaev Masheed (Kashmiri: /ˈnəw ˌməʃiːd̪ /), is aMughal erastonemosque located in theold city ofSrinagar, in the union territory ofJammu and Kashmir,India. It is located on the left bank of the RiverJhelum, just opposite the shrine ofKhanqah-e-Moula.[1] The mosque structure is aMonument of National Importance.[2]

History

[edit]

The mosque was built by Mughal EmpressNoor Jehan, the wife of emperorJehangir, in 1623.[3] Soon after its construction, the mosque was declared unfit for prayers and was used instead for non-religious purposes.[4] The structure was reconverted into a mosque in the early 1930s.[a]

Architecture

[edit]

The mosque has some distinct features that separate it from the rest of the mosques in theKashmir Valley. Unlike other mosques, it does not have the traditional pyramidal roof. Furthermore, the mosque has ninemehraabs (arches), with the central one being larger than the others.[5][6]
