Patrick Edward Rice (born November 2, 1963) is an American former professionalbaseballpitcher and coach. He pitched in 7 games for theSeattle Mariners ofMajor League Baseball (MLB) in1991.
Rice grew up in aAir Forcefamily which eventually settled inColorado Springs where he attendedAir Academy High School.[1] He then attended theUniversity of Arkansas. He signed with the Mariners as an undrafted free agent in 1986.[2]
After several years in the minors, Rice debuted with the Mariners on May 18, 1991, starting and earning a win over theNew York Yankees. After 5 multi-inning relief appearances, he made one final start in the majors, taking the loss and not lasting three innings against theDetroit Tigers on June 16.[3] He continued to pitch for the Triple-ACalgary Cannons through 1992.[4]
In1995, Rice attempted to comeback as areplacement player in spring training for the Mariners during theongoing strike. After being released in March, he agreed to be the pitching coach for the team's Low-A affiliate, theWisconsin Timber Rattlers.[5] He coached there through1997, then was the pitching coach for theOrlando Ray in1998[6] andNew Haven Ravens in1999, both Double-A teams. From2000–2007, he was the minor league pitching coordinator for the Mariners.[7]
Rice left the Mariners' organization in2008 to become the pitching coach for the Single-ASan Jose Giants in theSan Francisco Giants organization. On December 15, 2008, he was announced as the pitching coach for the Triple-AFresno Grizzlies.[8] Rice left the Giants organization after 2013 season. TheLos Angeles Angels of Anaheim then hired him to be the pitching coach for the Double AArkansas Travelers. In 2015, he was named the pitching coordinator of the upper level for the Angels. Rice was hired by theWashington Nationals to be the pitching coach for the Low-AFredericksburg Nationals during their inaugural season in 2021. Rice lasted one season with the team.[7]
Rice's son Stephen Rice was theplay by play broadcaster for the Fresno Grizzlies, now theSingle-A affiliate of theColorado Rockies, in 2023.[9]
