Distribution of the species in the genusParus.Parus bokharensis is now treated as a subspecies ofP. major

Parus is a genus ofOld Worldbirds in the tit familyParidae. It was formerly a large genus containing most of the 50 odd species in the family Paridae. The genus was split into several resurrected genera following the publication of a detailedmolecular phylogenetic analysis in 2013.[1][2] The genus name,Parus, is theLatin word for "tit".

Taxonomy

[edit]

The genusParus was introduced in 1758 by the Swedish naturalistCarl Linnaeus in thetenth edition of hisSystema Naturae.[3] The genus name isLatin for "tit".[4] Of the 12 species included in the genus by Linnaeus, thetype species was designated as thegreat tit (Parus major) byGeorge Robert Gray in 1840.[5][6]
