TheParty of Progress and Socialism (Arabic:حزب التقدم والاشتراكية,romanized: ḥizb at-taqaddum wal-ištirakīya;Standard Moroccan Tamazight:ⴰⴽⴰⴱⴰⵔ ⵏ ⵓⴼⴰⵔⴰ ⴷ ⵜⵏⵎⵍⴰ,romanized: akabar n ufaru n tnmla;French:Parti du Progrès et du Socialisme,PPS) is aleft-wingsocialistpolitical party inMorocco.
The party was founded in 1974[1] byAli Yata as the successor ofMoroccan Communist Party andParty of Liberation and Socialism.[2]
After the fall of theEastern Bloc, the party distanced itself fromcommunism andArab socialism.
In theparliamentary election held on 27 September 2002, the party won 11 out of 325 seats. In the nextparliamentary election, held on 7 September 2007, the party won 17 out of 325 seats.
The PPS was included in the government ofPrime MinisterAbbas El Fassi, formed on 15 October 2007.[3]
The party won 12 out of 325 seats in theparliamentary election held in 2016.[4]
The PPS achieved its best result in the2021 Moroccan general election winning 22 out of 395 seats and was able to form a parliamentary group for the first time in the party's history, despite the fact that party leaderNabil Benabdellah was defeated in theRabat constituency.[5]
