Parry Shen (born June 26, 1973) is an American actor, author, screenwriter, and producer. Shen's first major acting role was inBetter Luck Tomorrow as Ben Manibag, the film's leading character. He also starred in another Asian American film,Surrogate Valentine. He has since starred in the horror filmHatchet and its sequelsHatchet II,Hatchet III, andVictor Crowley. He had a recurring role as Tyler Li in the television seriesTru Calling. He has portrayed the role ofBrad Cooper onGeneral Hospital since 2013.

He is also known for his voice acting in the video gamesSleeping Dogs,Mortal Kombat X, andMortal Kombat 1.

Early life

Shen was born June 26, 1973, inNew York City, in theborough ofQueens. He went toArchbishop Molloy High School, then an all-boys (but now co-educational) Roman Catholic school inBriarwood, in Queens, New York, and at theUniversity at Buffalo.[1] His mother is fromHong Kong. His father is fromShanghai.[2] When he moved to California, he worked as a dorm parent atVillanova Preparatory School, a privatecollege preparatory school inOjai.[3] Shen is ofChinese descent and can speakCantonese.[1]

Shen is best known as the lead character, Ben Manibag, inJustin Lin's seminal Asian American film,Better Luck Tomorrow (2002). Shen was also a main part of the cast ofHatchet, in which he also returned forAdam Green'sHatchet II andHatchet III.[4] Shen has appeared in Ed Decter'sThe New Guy (2002) oppositeDJ Qualls andZooey Deschanel (as Glen). Shen also appears as the lead husband character, Luke, in Richard Wong'sYes We're Open oppositeLynn Chen and inDave Boyle'sSurrogate Valentine (2011) as Bradley, Pearry Reginald Teo'sThe Gene Generation (as Jackie, the brother ofBai Ling's character), and Eric Shapiro'sRule of 3 (2008) (as David).

On May 6, 2013, Shen debuted in therecurring role ofBrad Cooper onGeneral Hospital.[5] He also appeared in the feature filmAutomation.[6]

Shen is Managing Editor ofSecret Identities: The Asian American Superhero Anthology, published byThe New Press in April 2009.[7] Its sequel,Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology, was published in November 2012.[8][9][1]

Screenwriting and producing

Shen has written and produced the feature film entitledUnidentified (2013), directed by Jason Richard Miller.[1]

Speaking engagements

Shen speaks at numerous universities about theentertainment industry and shares his experiences as anAsian American in the media.[1]

Personal life

Shen has been married to his wife, Kim, since August 2, 2002, and they have two daughters.[1]
