Pareiodon microps is aspecies ofcatfish (order Siluriformes) of thefamilyTrichomycteridae, and the only species of thegenusPareiodon.[1] It isendemic toBrazil where it occurs in theAmazon Basin.[1][2]
Like its stegophiline relatives, they possess a sucking, disk-like mouth, along with inter- andopercular spines which facilitates adhesion to its food items, though this species is ascavenger, unlike itsectoparasitic relatives. During feeding events involvingvertebrate carcasses,P. microps may be associated with other species of scavengers; the whale candirus,Cetopsis candiru andCe. coecutiens, are not closely related toP. microps despite also being considered "candiru"; the vulture catfishCalophysus macropterus is a much larger scavenger that may also join the candirus at the carcass.[3]
