Pardirallus is agenus of bird in the familyRallidae. It contains three species native to marshland areas ofSouthern,Central America and theCaribbean, although fossil evidence indicates they once ranged north to what is nowIdaho.[2] They are 25–38 cm long and have a long greenish bill and reddish legs. Thespotted rail is blackish-brown with white markings while the other two are brown above and dark grey below.[2]
The genusPardirallus was erected by the French naturalistCharles Lucien Bonaparte in 1856 with thespotted rail (Pardirallus maculatus) as thetype species.[3][4] The generic name combines theAncient Greekpardos meaning "leopard" with the genusRallus.[5]

Afossil species,Pardirallus lacustris, is known from theLate Pliocene of theHagerman Fossil Beds ofIdaho. It was formerly assigned to the genusPorzana upon its description in 1958 byPierce Brodkorb and later to the genusRallus in 1968 byAlan Feduccia, but an analysis byStorrs L. Olson in 1977 transferred it toPardirallus.[7]
