Paradoxornis is a genus ofpasserine birds in the parrotbill familyParadoxornithidae that are native toEast,Southeast andSouth Asia.
The genusParadoxornis was introduced in 1836 by the English ornithologistJohn Gould to accommodate a single species,Paradoxornis flavirostrisGould, theblack-breasted parrotbill. This is thetype species of the genus.[1][2] The genus name combines theAncient Greek παραδοξος/paradoxos meaning "extraordinary" with ορνις/ornis, ορνιθος/ornithos meaning "bird".[3]
Based on the resultsmolecular phylogenetic study published in 2019,[4] the genus now includes species that were previously placed in the generaCalamornis,Conostoma,Cholornis, andPsittiparus.[5]
