"Panini" is a song by American rapperLil Nas X from his second EP7 (2019). It was released as his second single throughColumbia Records on June 20, 2019.[3][4][5] "Panini" was written by Lil Nas X, alongside production duoTake a Daytrip (consisting of Denzel Baptiste and David Biral) and co-producerDot da Genius. Late singer andNirvana frontmanKurt Cobain is also credited as a writer due to the chorus containing an interpolation of the band's song "In Bloom" from their second studio album,Nevermind.

The song, when released as a single, hit number 5 on theUSBillboard Hot 100, number 2 on theHot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 1 on the USBillboardRhythmic charts. The song also hit the top 10 in 4 charts in the United States and inBelgium,Canada,Greece,Latvia, andLithuania.Mike Diva directed the "Panini" music video starringSkai Jackson. Released on the 5th of September, 2019, it features her trying to outrun Lil Nas X and choreographed robots in a futuristic setting. A remix with American rapperDaBaby was released on September 13, 2019.

Background

[edit]

"Panini" was released byColumbia Records as Lil Nas X's second single on June 20, 2019, one day before the release of7. Multiple music publications wrote that the chorus of the song contains an interpolation of "In Bloom", released on the 1991 albumNevermind byNirvana and written by frontmanKurt Cobain.[6][7][8] Lil Nas X, however, stated that the similarity between the two songs' melodies was unintentional, as he was not introduced to the band's music until after recording "Panini".[9] Nevertheless, he later thanked Cobain's daughter,Frances Bean Cobain, for being able to interpolate "In Bloom".[10]

"Panini" is named after the fictionalcabbitbear hybrid of the same name—a character from the animated television seriesChowder with the character herself being named after thePaninisandwich.[9]It is composed inthe key of F minor and employscommon time meter. The synth-drivenostinato simulates the timbre of abrass instrument and implies av-VI harmonic progression with the tonic chord momentarily bridging the other two and effectively behaving as a passing tone; a similar approach is likewise found inToto's hit "Africa".[citation needed]

Critical reception

[edit]

Beatriz da Costa ofVibe said the track felt like "a distant cousin toTravis Scott's tasty hits", and called the track "short and enjoyable".[11] Rosalind Faulkner ofNPR said that the track and Lil Nas X proved that "he can be more than aone-hit wonder."[12]

Music video

[edit]
Skai Jackson appears in the video.

Mike Diva directed the music video for "Panini" starringSkai Jackson.[14] It premiered on September 5, 2019. The video features her trying to outrun Lil Nas X and choreographed robots in a futuristicTokyo setting.[15] It makes use of several lights, holograms and advertisements; along with floating billboards and flying cars.[16]

Stereogum's Tom Breihan compared the visuals to the 1982 filmBlade Runner, interpreting them as "a sort of parody of what it's like to have a song that's suddenly inescapable, and for what it's like when other people have to deal with that omnipresence".[17] Kristin Corry ofVice similarly wrote that the video could be taken metaphorically, "because his presence in it is similar to the mega-success of the ubiquitous 'Old Town Road' this summer".[18] Writing forVulture, Zoe Haylock praised the video by stating that its art department and visual effects team deserve "anAcademy Award?Nobel Prize?".[19]

Remix and alternate music video

[edit]

About a week after the "Panini" music video, theDaBaby remix of "Panini" with an animated unofficial video on Lil Nas X'sYouTube channel was released on September 13, 2019, with characters from theCartoon Network animated series,Chowder, due to the fact that a character fromChowder has the name of "Panini".[20] The animated music video was animated and directed by Emonee Larussa,[21] and also co-animated by Joey Prosser, Chaz Bottoms, and Fifthpower.C. H. Greenblatt, the creator ofChowder, was not involved in the production of the music video, although he praised it on hisTumblr blog.[22] The song would hit number 14 on theNew Zealand Hot Singles chart alongside the original version of the song.
