Pan Wuyun (Chinese:潘悟云;pinyin:Pān Wùyún, born March 1943) is a leadingChineselinguist and specialist inhistorical Chinese phonology.
Pan was born inRui'an,Zhejiang in 1943. After graduating from high school, he was unable to attend college because of his family background and worked as a labourer in severalWenzhou factories. After the end of theCultural Revolution, he tested into the graduate program ofFudan University in 1979, and earned his master's degree in Chinese language in 1982. He subsequently taught atWenzhou Normal College before becoming a professor atShanghai Normal University. He also taught as a visiting professor at theUniversity of California, Berkeley, theUniversity of Wisconsin, theUniversity of Oslo, theCity University of Hong Kong, theChinese University of Hong Kong, and theNational Tsing Hua University.[1]
The strong point of Pan's research and teaching is the historical phonology ofOld Chinese,Middle Chinese, and Chinese dialectology.[2]
