Pamela Fortunee Salem (22 January 1944 – 21 February 2024) was a British film and television actress. She was born inBombay, India, and educated atWispers School[1] andHeidelberg University in Germany, and later at theCentral School of Speech and Drama in London, England.[2][3]

Salem was known for her co-starring role in the early 1980sITV children's fantasy seriesInto the Labyrinth as the evil witch Belor,[4] and her late 1980s guest role in the BBC soap operaEastEnders as shady mafia affiliateJoanne Francis.[5] She was also seen in two adventures ofDoctor Who: as Toos inThe Robots of Death (1977)[6] and as Professor Rachel Jensen inRemembrance of the Daleks (1988),[7] a role she reprised forBig Finish Productions' officially licensedaudio drama spin-off seriesCounter Measures.[8] She was also heard as one of the many voices of Xoanon inThe Face of Evil (1977).[9] She had auditioned for the role of theFourth Doctor'scompanionLeela but the role went toLouise Jameson. Salem also had a recurring role in the British sitcomFrench Fields from 1989 to 1991.[10]Other television guest appearances included roles in popular British series such asOut of the Unknown,Blake's 7 (as Kara in "Cygnus Alpha", 1978),The Onedin Line,The Professionals (episodes "The Female Factor", 1978, and "Fall Girl", 1978),Howards' Way,Ever Decreasing Circles,Tripods, episodes ofAll Creatures Great and Small as Zoe Bennett; and later on in American series includingMagnum, P.I.,Party of Five,ER andThe West Wing where she played a British prime minister.[2][11][12]

In film, Salem played the role ofMiss Moneypenny in the 'unofficial' 1983James Bond filmNever Say Never Again, starringSean Connery.[13] She also appeared inMichael Crichton'sThe First Great Train Robbery (1979, another film which starred Connery), as well as supporting roles inThe Bitch (1979),Night Train to Murder (1983),After Darkness (1985),Thirteen at Dinner (1985),Salome (1986),God's Outlaw (1987),Succubus (1987),Gods and Monsters (1998),Quicksand (2002) andApril's Shower (2003).[12] She can also be heard as the Queen in the English dub of "Hellsing Ultimate OVA IV" (2008).[citation needed]

Personal life and death

Salem was married to the actor Michael O'Hagan until his death on 1 November 2017. They lived inSurfside, Florida,[13] where she died on 21 February 2024, at the age of 80.[14]
