ThePahranagat National Wildlife Refuge[1] is a protected wildlife refuge, at the southern end of thePahranagat Valley and administered by theU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is 90 miles (140 km) north ofLas Vegas,Nevada, inLincoln County, Nevada. The 5,380-acre (21.8 km2) refuge was created on August 16, 1963, and is part of the largerDesert National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which also includes theAsh Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, theDesert National Wildlife Refuge, and theMoapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
The refuge provides high-quality migration and winteringhabitat formigrating birds, especiallywaterfowl, within thePacific Flyway. It also contains the prehistoricBlack Canyon Petroglyphs.
Work is underway to restorewetland[2] and desert upland habitats to what was found on the refuge over 100 years ago.
