Pablo Chinchilla Vega (born December 21, 1978, inEscazú)[1] is aCosta Ricanfootballer who currently is the player-manager of Austrian lower league side FC Koblach.
Chinchilla began his career in the youth system ofPrimera División de Costa Rica teamAlajuelense. He was loaned to Austrian side Altach for a season[2] before summoned back by Liga[3] and he eventually graduated to their senior side making his professional debut for them on 15 August 1999 againstCarmelita. He then scored his first goal on 12 September 1999 againstSan Carlos.[1] After five years with theRojinegros, during which time he won the2004 CONCACAF Champions' Cup, he joinedLos Angeles Galaxy ofMajor League Soccer prior to the 2005 season. His stay in theUSA was largely unsuccessful and he returned to Alajuelense after just one season.
In summer 2006 Chinchilla rejoinedAustrian clubSC Rheindorf Altach,[4] and spent two years playing with them in theAustrian Football Bundesliga. After a brief spell back home in Costa Rica atLiberia Mía[5] Chinchilla returned to Austria by signing withLASK Linz in January 2009.[6] He went amateur when he joined lower league side Lochau.
In summer 2013, Chinchilla left Lochau and moved to Austrian Landesklasse side Koblach to become player manager[7] and extended his contract with a year in March 2014.[8]
At junior level, Chinchilla played at the1995 FIFA U-17 World Championship and the1997 FIFA World Youth Championship.[9]
He made his debut forCosta Rica in a November 1999friendly match againstSlovakia and earned a total of 39 caps, scoring 1 goal.[10] He was a late addition to their2002 World Cup squad, replacing the injuredReynaldo Parks[11] and represented his country at the2003 UNCAF Nations Cup[12] as well as at the2000[13] and2003 CONCACAF Gold Cups.[14] He was a non-playing squad member at the2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.[15]
His final international was a February 2008 friendly game againstJamaica.
