Dhanapal was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as anAll India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate fromSankagiri constituency in the1977,1980 and1984 and2001 elections.^[2][3][4][5] In the 2011 and2016 Tamil Nadu assembly elections he won fromRasipuram^[6] andAvanashi constituencies, respectively.^[7]
